Previews Bach to the future Just over eighteen months ago, Clyde M i t c h e l l brought the North Shore its o w n orchestra, Sinfonía. A s w e l l as evening perfromances, M i t c h e l l also feels passionate a b o u t bringing great music to a younger audience, a n d so he started a series of c o n certs for children entitled Clydeoscope. A t 2:30 pm o n M a r c h 10, M i t c h e l l a n d members of Sinfonía w i l l present a program called Bach t o t h e Future. This exciting a n d fun-filled C l y d e o s c o p e concert is an e x p l o ration of the history a n d d e v e l o p m e n t of the orchestra up t o t h e present day. The first orchestras w e r e basically strings, but in time different instruments w e r e a d d e d t o the orchestra - w o o d w i n d s , brass and kettledrums. W i t h t h e a d d i t i o n of these n e w instruments, musical styles c h a n g e d as w e l l . Today's electronics are bringing a totally n e w flavour t o music. Bach t o the Future w i l l begin w i t h t h e c o m p o s i t i o n s of Johann Sebastian Bach a n d carry o n t h r o u g h t o the music of next year, w i t h special musical passages illustrating w h a t the composers might have first heard inside their heads. - Peggy Stortz Having a ball: Cinderella (Emma Tompkins) and her handsome prince (Scott Perrie) tread the light fantastic at Capilano College Performing Arts Theatre in mid-March. "Parents and children big and small will delight in the magic of this production," says director Gillian Barber. "We chose the Rodgers and Hammerstein version because of the strong story and the lovely music.
