Arts symposium set for February 2 To the ancient Greeks the w o r d " s y m p o s i u m " meant a drinking party, a sort of p h i l o s o p h e r s ' thrash at w h i c h ideas f l o w e d as freely as the w i n e . North Vancouver's fifth a n n u a l C o m m u n i t y Arts S y m p o s i u m o n February 2 e m p h a s i z e s the ideas rather t h a n the booze, but w i l l be just as enjoyable. The keynote of the day is practicality. A m o n g the events p l a n n e d are sessions g i v i n g a behind-the-scenes v i e w of public arts projects a n d h o w t o increase the chances of having a piece accepted. There are meetings about screenwriting, music therapy, life d r a w i n g , feature-story w r i t i n g , an insider's experiences in the music industry, a n d more. There's also a writer's contest, w i t h the w i n n i n g entry p u b lished in Arts Alive. A t the s a m e time, the third a n n u a l North Vancouver A r t Fully Exposed, a public arts market, w i l l be underway. This gives established a n d e m e r g i n g North Vancouver artists, performers, a n d writers a chance t o s h o w their w o r k , make contacts, a n d also make sales. Selection of participants is by peer jury a n d the deadline for a p p l i c a tion is January 2 1 . Registration for the day of w o r k s h o p s , speakers, breakfast, and lunch is $ 1 5 for North Vancouver City a n d District residents a n d $25 for non-residents. The registration deadline is January 3 0 .
