Cover story House paintings Jody Vajda (pronounced "vyder") was born in North Vancouver and grew up in the Upper Lonsdale house she left and later came back to as an adult. It's the house she lives in now, on a quiet road that meanders along the fold of the hill high above the highway. But you can't see the highway. You can't see much of anything, in fact, except for glimpses of the ocean beyond the trees. The cedars all around cut off a lot of light. Yet in other ways it's a good house for a painter. A gallery in the south-facing room she paints in and the wooded slope that drops away toward the water mean you're always aware of space, and how space can be broken up. 8 January | February
