History Hounds in North Shore Schools millennium project | by D a r r i n Martens Move over Sherlock Holmes, the North Shore History Hounds are on the case! These junior detectives can be found throughout North and West Vancouver schools in grades three to five, working on some very important projects. Their case: To learn more about the history, development, and people who helped create their community and to relate this to their own lives and family through a special research and exhibition project. The N o r t h Vancouver M u s e u m & Archives has initiated a project, w i t h t h e assistance o f t h e V a n c o u v e r F o u n d a t i o n , t i t l e d Historians i n t h e Schools, w h e r e b y a historical interpreter visits a school three times over the period of o n e m o n t h . Isaac Vanderhorst, North Vancouver M u s e u m historical interpreter for t h e project, has been o n e of t h e driving factors of this p r o g r a m . His g o a l is s i m p l e : " T o make history c o m e t o life a n d create, in his audiences, a n e w - f o u n d interest in a n d c o n nection w i t h t h e p a s t . " T h r o u g h o u t these visits, several g o a l s have been set that relate to the grade three to five integrated resource p a c k a g e directed by t h e local s c h o o l b o a r d . G a t h e r i n g a n d recording i n f o r m a t i o n , d e v e l o p i n g interpretations f r o m a variety o f sources, a n d creating a p r e s e n t a t i o n that clearly s h o w c a s e s t h e ideas a n d i n f o r m a t i o n a s s e m b l e d a b o u t t h e project are t h e purposes f o r this p r o g r a m . In w o r k s h o p one, t h e students look at a series of historical images f r o m their c o m m u n i t y a n d try t o figure o u t as much as they c a n a b o u t t h e p h o t o g r a p h . They w i l l discover t h e t i m e in w h i c h t h e p h o t o w a s t a k e n , t h e identity of t h e people, t h e surroundings, a n d w h a t activities are t a k i n g place. In w o r k s h o p t w o , the historian visiting t h e class presents a n u m ber of artifacts that relate t o their c o m m u n i t y . The children learn h o w to identify e a c h object t h r o u g h their five senses a n d f i n d o u t w h a t s t o ries a n object c a n recount by t h e w a y it is u s e d in t h e past. During w o r k s h o p three, students listen t o a n oral history from a n elder c o m m u n i t y m e m b e r w h o recounts a n event or series of events in their n e i g h b o u r h o o d ' s past. This oral history takes t h e children back in t i m e t o w h e n their community, its p e o p l e a n d its activities w e r e vastly different f r o m t h e present. A selection of these Present Pal projects will be on display at the Artist for Kids Trust Gallery to May 13 as part of the Youthful Visions exhibition. The entire collection of projects will be part of a Heritage Fair May 12 and 13 at the Artist for Kids Trust Gallery. The final project for t h e students is t o contact a Present Pal -- a g r a n d p a r e n t , teacher, c o a c h , o r elder c o m m u n i t y member. The g o a l o f this activity is t o search o u t a n interesting story about the past. The "history h o u n d " then acts as a historian a n d questions the Present Pal a b o u t his or her life a n d c o m m u n i t y prior to the year 2 0 0 0 , as w e l l as collecting artifacts or p h o t o g r a p h s relating to t h e p a l . U p o n c o m p l e t i o n of this investigation, each student w i l l create a display that tells a story a b o u t his o r h e r Present Pal.
