Elements of Transition When Kamloops artist Donovan King Pettigrew was looking for a way to add more energy to his paintings he decided to use the element of fire. First he applies oil paint to the wood surface, then some lighter fluid and finally he really turns on the heat with a Road Safety Banners The banners will be designed to promote safe driving habits, especially in school zones. Sonia Wolowidnyk of the ICBC Road Sense Team says, "When a road safety message is created from a child's imagination, the outcome is always impressive." This pilot project was launched in March of this year at Blueridge Elementary. blowtorch. The results are amazing. Pettigrew says that the fire creates new images and, just as a carver allows the rock or wood to dictate the end product, he waits for what the flames will reveal. Throughout the month of May, the First Street Gallery at 252 East First will be exhibiting the paintings of this innovative artist. The District of North Vancouver, ICBC Road Sense and North Shore Autoplan Brokers have teamed up to develop a community project to raise awareness about road safety. Under the direction of artists Jacqueline Metz and Nancy Chew of Muse Atelier, students in eight elementary schools are creating safety banners which will be mounted outside the participating schools and at nearby intersections.
