W i t h s o much emphasis o n t h e three Rs at school, s u m m e r is a t i m e for youngsters t o learn a n d express themselves artistically. But if there's g o i n g t o be any learning h a p p e n ing, it's g o t t o be f u n ! W h a t better w a y t o m a k e those w e e k s w o r t h w h i l e than f o r t h e kids t o join o n e of the art, theatre, or music p r o g r a m s offered o n the North Shore? capture t h e sights a n d a t m o s p h e r e of t h e scene before h i m . A n a c c o m p l i s h e d storyteller, he entertains students w i t h t h e tales of his adventures in t h e w i l d . The other in-house artists w i l l be M a r c u s B o w c o t t a n d performance artist Tiki M u l v a h i l l . M a c D o n a l d has noticed that t h e resident artists often b e c o m e t h e subjects of study by t h e students. In turn, t h e students are e n c o u r a g e d t o bare their souls a n d make that t h e t h e m e for their w o r k . These c a m p s are for kids w h o are fairly serious a b o u t art. " H a v i n g like-minded kids together helps t h e m to value themselves as artists. They Kids w i l l use p a i n t e d broken auto glass t o w o r k o n i n d i v i d u a l mosaics. A l s o n e w at Deep C o v e this year a r e p r i n t m a k i n g a n d p a p e r m a k i n g classes. North Vancouver recreation centres offer a variety o f s u m m e r art camps for kids ages 5 t o 12. Pottery is very p o p u l a r a t Delbrook a n d Parkgate Centres, w h e r e there are fullscale studios f o r kids t o take advantage of. Teens c a n work o n clay a n d glass art as w e l l as clay jewelry. A r t in t h e Courtyard, a p r o g r a m for kids a n d their caregivers, is back for a s e c o n d run at Lonsdale Recreation Centre. A t the Silk Purse on West Vancouver's waterfront, summer arts programs include Jungle Fever (art a n d animals,) Little Masterpieces (learning about t h e influences of different artists,) Crazy Creations, A l l A b o u t Me, a n d Puppets Galore. The peak of the action is during Harmony Arts Festival, August 3 to 12, w h e n there w i l l be drop-in workshops throughout the week a n d a fantastic Creative Kids Day o n A u g u s t 11. A n e w series o f s u m mer art w o r k s h o p s is also being offered at the West Vancouver M u s e u m & Archives. ART This is t h e eighth year for t h e Paradise Valley S u m m e r School of Visual A r t . O r g a n i z e d by Bill M a c D o n a l d through t h e Artists f o r Kids o r g a n i z a t i o n , these c a m p s are a fantastic o p p o r t u n i t y for kids t o be taught by w e l l k n o w n w o r k i n g artists in a beautiful o u t d o o r setting. The sessions are held in July a t North Vancouver's O u t d o o r School near S q u a m i s h , BC; o n e w e e k for 8 t o 12 year olds, a n d t h e s e c o n d week for the 13-to-18-year-old set. This year's instructors include w e l l - k n o w n BC painter Toni Onley, f a m o u s for flying his o w n plane t o remote settings a n d then using the w i n g of the plane as an easel u p o n w h i c h t o May | June learn a lot from each other. It c a n be a lifec h a n g i n g experience," says M a c D o n a l d . M a n y of the p r o g r a m s t h r o u g h Arts in the C o v e are also for dedicated y o u n g artists. Artist Ross M u n r o , k n o w n for his intensity, is offering b o t h d r a w i n g a n d watercolor p a i n t i n g w o r k shops t o 9 to 14 year olds. Bill Emmett takes a fun-loving a p p r o a c h in his classes, w h i c h include C a r t o o n Creations a n d Visual A r t Explorations.
