M a n y of us remember that magical experience of seeing something for the first time, free from the burden of names and meanings that comes with time and age. Youthful Visions, as part of the Visions of the North Shore M i l l e n n i u m Project, attempts to recall this feeling of discovery by looking at places in our community through the eyes of North Shore youth. Sponsored by the Vancouver F o u n d a t i o n , Youthful classes for the North Vancouver M u s e u m a n d Archive's Historians in the School p r o g r a m . Artists in Residence a n d Historians in the School gave students from Kindergarten to G r a d e 12 the opportunity to explore their o w n historical research a n d artistic interpretations of the selected Visions sites. Students w e r e given the chance to w o r k w i t h historical interpreters Frankie-Lou Fuller a n d Isaac Vanderhorst from the North Vancouver M u s e u m a n d Archives, as w e l l as celebrated Wsions artists Pierre Coupey, W a y n e Eastcott, D a m i a n George, Bonnie Jordan, Setsuko Piroche, Ross Penhall, A r n o l d Shives, Joan Smith, a n d X w a Lack Tun (Rick Harry). The Historians in the School p r o g r a m focuses o n places in the student's o w n backyards. In keeping w i t h the type of detective w o r k undertaken by professional historians, students explored o l d p h o t o graphs, analyzed artifacts from the m u s e u m ' s collection, a n d enjoyed stories of the exploits a n d adventures of early residents. By peering into the w o r l d of the past, students can imagine w h a t life w a s like then a n d ask questions such as, " W h o w a s Mr. M o o d y of M o o d y v i l l e , Visions is a c o l - anyway?" These investigations into the rich histories of the North Shore w i l l ultimately take shape in n u m b e r of projects. Ranging from displays of family a n d c o m m u n i t y treasures to things more interpretive such as a fictional conversation w i t h a historical figure, these projects a l l o w students to s h o w c a s e their skills as c o m m u n i t y historians w h i l e developing a deeper appreciation of the history that c a m e before them. laboration b e t w e e n North Shore schools.
