Ilona Beiks, Happy New Year! Do I look proud? Well, I am. As you can see, Arts Alive is starting off the New Year with a new look - one that I hope reflects the North Shore's vibrant and dynamic arts community. I can't think of a better way to launch the year: Alive and in colour! At this time of year, I, like many people, find myself in quiet retrospection: looking back at where I have been, where I am, and where I think I'm going. It is a time of counting my many blessings (although some didn't seem like it at the time) and making a few resolutions. And Arts Alive magazine is as a 3right up there near the top of both lists, I originally came to Arts Alive month temporary maternity leave replacement. Two years later, I am still here and savouring every moment. Can you imagine? I meet people who absolutely love what they're doing! Painters, writers, musicians, EDITOR photographers, bookstore owners, actors, sculptors, directors, curators, gallery volunteers and many many more. To be in the presence of such spirits is truly inspiring. Each time I walk away from an encounter with one of these creative souls I look at the world around me in a new way. And - I make a few resolutions. A key resolution for me this year is to ensure that this magazine is the best that it can be. As a community publication, funded primarily by the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver, it is a courageous initiative by local government. In addition to being for and about artists and the arts-minded on the North Shore, it is also written by many of these individuals. As editor, I want to meet more of you and hear from you. Arts A//Ve is here for everybody in the community to use, so take advantage of it! Make sure your events get listed in the calendar. Try writing a story or two. Contributions are not only welcome - they form the backbone of the magazine. Invite me to view your portfolio or tell me about an arts related issue that you feel is important for others to know.
