arts editorial "Every day, we walk or drive in our community and yet, we see only the surface." -- D e b o r a h Tuyttens, H e r i t a g e S e r v i c e s C o o r d i n a t o r / C u r a t o r , W e s t V a n c o u v e r Museum & Archives I've recently r e t u r n e d f r o m a w r i t i n g and p h o t o g r a p h y p r o j e c t in M e x i c o . F o r sevI eral w e e k s , I lived in small villages w h i c h r e m a i n relatively u n t o u c h e d by p r e s e n t day civilization. Many of the p e o p l e I m e t only s p o k e a pre-Spanish dialect o r c o n v e r s e d a m o n g s t each o t h e r in b i r d s o n g . It was, in s o m e ways, a s u r r e a l j o u r n e y i n t o a land w h e r e art is a vital c o m p o n e n t of t h e landscape and physical and h u m a n geography is a vital c o m p o n e n t of t h e art. I was p a r t i c u l a r l y fascinated w i t h h o w n e w g e n e r a t i o n s of artists are leaving t h e i r villages, but n o t t h e i r heritage. A s they forge a n e w artistic path into t h e w o r l d , they c o n s c i o u s l y strive t o e n s u r e that the dignity and richness of t h e i r past, c o m b i n e d w i t h t h e magical m y s t i c i s m o f t h e i r landscape, remain f o r e v e r the f o u n d a t i o n of t h e i r o w n ' m o d e r n ' w o r k . "It m u s t be h a r d f o r y o u t o be back h e r e ! " a f r i e n d e x c l a i m e d after hearing a b o u t my trip. But actually, it isn't. I think w o r k i n g o n this magazine, specifically focusing o n t h e N o r t h S h o r e arts scene, has a d d e d a n e w d i m e n s i o n t o the way I e x p e r i e n c e a p e o p l e and p l a c e -- w h e r e e v e r in the w o r l d I a m . I've l e a r n e d it's m o r e i m p o r t a n t h o w y o u l o o k , than w h e r e y o u l o o k . Instead of lamenting t h e e n d of my M e x i c a n odyssey, I c o u l d n ' t w a i t t o see t h e d i s c o v e r i e s I can m a k e right h e r e . R e v i e w i n g t h e e d i t o r i a l line-up f o r this issue, I f o u n d myself just as e x c i t e d t o m e e t Pam B a k e r (page 10) and hear h e r s t o r y a n d see h e r c r e a t i o n s , as I was t o m e e t t h e " y o u n g e s t m o s t r e s p e c t e d " candle m a k e r in Santa A n n a . Yes, I w a s e n t h r a l l e d by an a n c i e n t t r i b a l dance a n d feast in a t r o p i c a l m o u n t a i n v i l l a g e -- b u t this year's U n d e r the V o l c a n o Festival (page 20) in C a t e s Park s o u n d s equally intriguing. T h i s s u m m e r , w e have t h e p e r f e c t o p p o r t u n i t y t o l o o k a r o u n d , literally, w i t h a n e w v i s i o n . July I m a r k s t h e launch o f R e f l e c t i o n s of Place, an e x h i b i t i o n o f 12 p r i n t s c r e a t e d by local artists (page 6). A p a r t o f t h e V i s i o n s of t h e N o r t h S h o r e M i l l e n n i u m P r o j e c t , o n e of t h e goals o f t h e e x h i b i t i o n is t o challenge e a c h v i e w e r t o l o o k a t t h e place w h e r e they live ( o r are visiting) in a n e w way.
