" T h e a n s w e r p r o v e d t o be a 5 " x 7 " w o o d e n f r a m e p r o v i d e d by the gallery.This object had t o be u s e d in t h e individual's a r t w o r k and w a s t o be t h e o n l y unifying f a c t o r f o r all t h e p a r t i c i p a t i n g m e m b e r s . T h e call f o r participating m e m b e r s was made t h r o u g h t h e m o n t h l y newsletter, dates w e r e established f o r p i c k u p of the 5 " x 7 " w o o d e n f r a m e , paper w o r k s t a r t e d , and t h e idea b e c a m e a reality - it s o u n d e d like a snap. H o w e v e r , w o r d of m o u t h kicked in and w i t h it c a m e t h e n e w m e m bers, the r e n e w i n g m e m b e r s and the t i m e - c o n s u m i n g paper w o r k . B e t w e e n p h o n e call inquiries, m e m b e r s h i p f o r m s w e r e c o m p l e t e d , frame receipts w e r e h a n d e d o u t and a bit of s t r u c t u r e d c o n f u s i o n set in. I p r o m i s e d p r i z e s - " w h e r e t o get t h e m ? " More p h o n e calls! " W o u l d it be okay t o create o u t s i d e of the frame? Is it okay t o paint t h e f r a m e , b e t t e r yet, is it okay t o d e c o r a t e the frame? C a n o n e w o r k in a t h r e e - d i m e n s i o n a l manner? C a n I b u r n the frame and put the ashes in o n e of my glass a r t w o r k s ? C a n I really d o anything I w a n t w i t h the frame? C a n I have m o r e than o n e frame? Is it all right if I put my o w n p o e t r y inside the frame? C a n I cut the frame up into little pieces?" Yes t o all the f o r e g o i n g but along w i t h t h e " y e s " , a r e m i n d e r that space r e s t r i c tions, due t o the n u m b e r of applicants, was a factor. T h e e x h i b i t i o n was taking off! Even m e m b e r s f r o m the B o a r d of D i r e c t o r s d e c i d e d t o take part in this e x h i b i t i o n . P h o t o g r a p h e r s , textile and fabric artists w e r e taking a keen i n t e r e s t C e r a m i c and glass artists w e r e vying f o r plinths as w e r e the m e m b e r s keen o n creating installations. A host of two-dimensional art was being discussed. T h e buzz was infectious. T h e day f o r delivery o f finished a r t w o r k arrived. M o r e paperwork was established t o e n s u r e p r o p e r i n v e n t o r y of w o r k s . T h e p r e v i o u s e x h i b i t i o n w a s taken d o w n , t h e gallery walls w e r e p r e p a r e d (sanded, filled, sanded and painted) but t h e n , " h o w d o I e x h i b i t 100 a r t w o r k s in a creative way s o t h e gallery d o e s n ' t l o o k j u n k y ? " W e l l , t o g e t h e r w i t h the assistance of the gallery's d e d i c a t e d g r o u p of v o l u n t e e r s , I believe w e c r e ated a truly u n i q u e , diverse and playful show. But don't take my w o r d f o r it, c o m e see f o r y o u r s e l f ! S u m m e r is a t i m e f o r u n b r i d l e d , playful creativity and that is t h e premise behind the Seymour A r t Gallery's s u m m e r e x h i b i t i o n D e s i g n f o r Living: It's A l l Small Stuff. Earlier this year, w h e n l o o k i n g through a sculptor's presentation package, I n o t i c e d a fascinating p h o t o g r a p h f e a t u r i n g an old-fashioned meat g r i n d e r s p e w i n g o u t a mangled f r a m e . A f t e r s t e w i n g f o r several w e e k s a b o u t this image, and mulling o v e r r e p e a t e d suggestions that t h e S A G h o s t a Salon de Refuse - an idea f o r t h e annual D e s i g n f o r Living e x h i bition emerged. I t h o u g h t o f m a k i n g this year's D e s i g n f o r Living an e x h i b i t i o n w h e r e all m e m b e r s o f t h e S e y m o u r A r t G a l l e r y c o u l d e x h i b i t w i t h o u t applying f o r jury. O n e a i m was t o e n c o u r a g e n o t o n l y t h e artist m e m b e r s o f t h e gallery, but t o also e n c o u r a g e t h o s e m e m b e r s w h o have a keen i n t e r e s t in a r t f o r art's sake, t o e n t e r a c r e a t i o n as w e l l . In o t h e r w o r d s , t h e first o n e h u n d r e d m e m bers of t h e gallery t o c o m m i t w e r e a u t o m a t i c a l l y a c c e p t e d t o this s h o w .
