F o r the classic l i t e r a t u r e buffs, I recommend two N o r t h Shore writers: Blanche H o w a r d and Barbara L a m b e r t . B o t h of t h e s e w o m e n are w o n d e r f u l w r i t e r s and have r e c e i v e d much positive acclaim f o r their w r i t ing. H o w a r d has w r i t t e n a n u m b e r of n o v e l s . T h e o n e I have m o s t e n j o y e d is A Celibate Season, c o - w r i t t e n w i t h C a r o l Shields and p u b l i s h e d in 1991. It is a delightful novel and w r i t t e n in an e p i s t o l a r y f o r m a t . T h e main c h a r a c t e r s , w h o have b e e n m a r r i e d f o r years, are faced w i t h a t e n - m o n t h s e p a r a t i o n . T h i n g s d o n ' t exactly go as p l a n n e d and t h e i r s e a s o n of celibacy p r o v e s t o m o r e o f a challenge than they had a n t i c i p a t e d . A Celibate Season is a great read: t h o u g h t - p r o v o k i n g and familiar. W e can also l o o k f o r w a r d t o a n o t h e r b o o k by H o w a r d b e i n g p u b l i s h e d by this fall. B a r b a r a L a m b e r t is the a u t h o r of t w o b o o k s . The Allegro Series and A Message for Mr. Lazarus. I have read the f o r m e r , a n d , having d o n e so, plan t o read t h e s e c o n d b o o k this summer. The Allegro Series is a love s t o r y involving three artists. Intertwined in this lovers' tale is the h i s t o r y of clothmaking and the m y t h o l o g y of the G r e e k artisans.This is Lambert's debut novel, and a w o n d e r f u l o n e at that. A Message for M r . Lazarus, a c o l l e c t i o n of seven s h o r t stories and a novella that take the reader f r o m V a n c o u v e r t o D r e s d e n , Nicaragua, B e r l i n , and C o s t a Rica, has also received g l o w i n g and favorable reviews. N o n - f i c t i o n lovers may w a n t t o read Gilean Douglas;Writing Nature, Finding Home, w r i t t e n by A n d r e a Lebowitz and Gillian Milton. I always enjoy reading a g o o d t h r i l l e r w h i l e relaxing in my backyard and especially a s t o r y that takes place in my h o m e t o w n . Lyndsay Smith's Proximate Couses is quite entertaining. Smith tells a s t o r y of o r g a n i z e d c r i m e , drugs, a n d m u r d e r , all w h i c h take place in d o w n t o w n Vancouver, W h i s t l e r , o r the Fraser Valley.
