T h e g r e e n s a r e m o r e v i b r a n t -- f r e s h , budding w i t h youthful o p t i m i s m . T h e c h e r r y b l o s s o m s n o w s t o r m s e n v e l o p t h e yard w i t h sparkling, light-hearted m a g i c -- a s if t h e garden w e r e e n c a s e d w i t h i n o n e o f t h o s e o l d - f a s h i o n e d glass globes. E v e r y t h i n g that has lain b e l o w , d o r m a n t , bursts t h r o u g h t h e earth's c r u s t , and I w a n d e r my garden in w o n d e r . I reacquaint myself w i t h perennial o l d friends: t h e p e o n y my M o t h e r gave m e w h e n I bought this h o u s e , t h e grape m u s c a r i c o l o n i z i n g o u t f r o m u n d e r t h e holly t r e e t o mingle w i t h t h e daffodils, and t h e slugs and snails. Yes, there's even s o m e t h i n g reassuring a b o u t t h e r e t u r n o f t h o s e d e t e r m i n e d e v e r - p e r s e vering c r e a t u r e s . A visit w i t h t h e garden fills m e w i t h a m y r i a d o f e m o t i o n s . I a m in a w e o f t h e creative genius r e f l e c t e d in t h e c e n t r e o f my elegantly e x q u i s i t e w h i t e tulips. I a m s a d d e n e d at t h e loss o f a rare blue h o s t a , and at t h e same t i m e I a m m o v e d t o sit beneath t h e c h e r r y t r e e a n d c o m p o s e haiku, like I d i d in high school. It is t r u e , " a r t imitates life." C e r t a i n l y , artists have b e e n i n s p i r e d by nature since t h e beginning o f t i m e . In fact, I'm positive t h a t t h o s e fossilized ferns f o u n d in m u s e u m s a r e p r e - h i s t o r i c garden art. A n d if y o u w a n t a simple lesson in c o l o u r , t e x t u r e , music a n d s c e n t take t h e advice o f U n i t y Bainbridge (a highly r e s p e c t e d N o r t h S h o r e A r t i s t ) a n d t r o m p o u t i n t o t h e local m o u n t a i n s and sit y o u r s e l f d o w n by a s k u n k - c a b b a g e p a t c h .
