W h e n researching the heritage of h e r r e s p e c t i v e site, John L a w s o n Park, Judge was f o r t u n a t e t o find Bessie Lawson's original diary at t h e m u s e u m . In it was an e x c e r p t a b o u t a family picnic o n June 15. 1907. Judge w a s delighted w i t h the d i s c o v e r y , since she has u s e d family letters that h e r great great g r a n d p a r e n t s wrote f e r r y o p e r a t i o n in W e s t V a n c o u v e r and h o s t e d many family gatherings. Visions is special t o Judge n o t only because of the h o n o u r of being c h o sen for t h e m i l l e n n i u m p r o j e c t but because "it is an interesting challenge artistically. I certainly feel a great sense o f r e s p o n s i b i l i t y t o t h e c o m m u n i t y in offering a meaningful, s u b t l e , a n d intriguing piece of w o r k . It has a l l o w e d m e t o play w i t h t h e visual layers of h i s t o r y and p r o v i d e an i n t e r p r e t a t i o n that t o u c h e s o n the past, c u r r e n t , and f u t u r e o f J o h n L a w s o n Park, particularly as a gathering s p o t f o r c e l e b r a t i o n s and picnics." A s Judge c r e a t e s , the o t h e r eleven c o m m i s s i o n e d artists parallel h e r p r o c e s s , c o l l e c t i n g archival s t o r i e s , p h o t o s , and r e c o r d s , e x p l o r i n g t h e i r r e s p e c t i v e l o c a t i o n s , a n d sketching the landscape. Each is creating a p r i n t image that c e l e b r a t e s the N o r t h Shore's heritage, c h a r a c t e r , a n d spirit and o p e n s the d o o r s t o visions o f t h e future. Judge w a s f o c u s i n g o n the s e c o n d layer of h e r p r i n t , c o n s i d e r i n g t h e c o l o u r s and images f o r the n e x t s t e p . T h e b r o w n a n d black inks p r o d u c e d a sepia quality that r e f l e c t e d the archival n a t u r e of t h e material she w a s w o r k i n g w i t h . I h e l p e d by t o each o t h e r in a p r e v i o u s p r i n t c o l l e c t i o n . " L e t t e r w r i t i n g and t h e nature of c o r r e s p o n d e n c e s are being changed and r e p l a c e d by faster m e t h o d s of c o m m u n i c a t i o n . I am a t t r a c t e d t o b o t h t h e physical beauty and t i m e less quality o f s c r i p t , especially t h e 1850s t o t h e t u r n o f the century." F o r this w o r k , Judge w a s also i n s p i r e d by t h e many Sunday picnic p h o t o g r a p h s taken at t h e p a r k and n o t e s t h e r e is quite a c o l l e c t i o n f r o m 1925 o n w a r d . T h e p i e r at J o h n L a w s o n Park was the site of the first c r a n k i n g the w h e e l t o p r i n t the c o p p e r plate i m a g e -- i t was c r u c i a l n o t t o pause m i d - p r o c e s s . W h e n w e lifted t h e paper, a n o t h e r layer o n the p r i n t was r e v e a l e d , like m e m o r i e s m e r g i n g together. Judge likes t h e p r o g r e s s i v e n a t u r e of p r i n t m a k i n g t o d e t e r m i n e h o w many layers o f images she will use.
