Mysterious Creatures: Truth or Fiction? visual arts by Karen Love D ocumentation of unfamiliar, now-extinct animals will be on view at Presentation House Gallery this summer. Organized by Spanish artists Joan Fontcuberta and Pere Formiguera, Fauna Secreta is an exhibition documenting the research of German biologist Dr. Peter Ameisenhaufen. The installation adopts the characteristic appearance of zoology and natural science museums: presenting photographs, radiographs, o u t d o o r sketches, maps, zoological cards, texts, sound, video, and more as evidence of the existence of these rather (it seems to us) monstrous beasts. The story goes that around 1987, Joan Fontcuberta and Pere Formiguera made a startling discovery. During a visit to Scotland, they found, in the attic of a house in Glasgow, the archive of Dr. Ameisenhaufen, w h o had died in a car crash in 1955. After further research into the life and w o r k of the doctor, they learned that his discoveries and subsequent documentation of what appeared to be many previously unknown, bizarre genetic mishaps, had provoked great debate and controversy during his time. Solenoglypha Polipodida is a snakelike creature with 12 feet that is supposed to be able to paralyze its prey with a high-pitched whistle. A n d there's a squirrel with webbed feet and a snake tail--Myodorifera Colubercauda. As one reviewer put it, "This modern-day bestiary is every bit as fascinating as the strange illuminations of the medieval age, and all the more disconcerting as the camera seems to bear undeniable witness to the beasties' meanderings." (Melissa Rombout, Boston). Fauna Secreta challenges our c o m fort zone of notions of "scientific truth" and the objectivity of scientific enquiry. I won't say more--wouldn't want to give it all away. So don't miss this opportunity to find out the truth yourself about Solenglypha Polipodida, a snake which gets about on six pairs of chicken legs, o r Micostrium Vulgaris, a menacing weapon-swinging mollusk, o r Centaurus Neandertalensis, which Dr. Ameisenhaufen didn't known Karen Love is Director/Curator at Presentation House Gallery. Fauna Secreta is curated by Sylvain Campeau and circulated by Occurrence, Montreal. The exhibit runs June 17-July 30 at Presentation House Gallery. On Saturday,July 30, at 2 pm.Joon Fontcuberta will give a talk about his astonishing project. Call to confirm location and time.
