B o r n in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1961, M c K e n z i e is Kevin McKenzie, W a r r i o r Shield with W a r Clubs, mixed media, 2000 45" x 37", the p r o d u c t of t w o cultures, C r e e and Scottish. H e a t t e n d e d the University of Regina, studying W e s t e r n A r t , and then c h o s e t o continue his studies at the O n t a r i o C o l l e g e of A r t . H e c o m pleted his f o r m a l art training at the Emily C a r r C o l l e g e of A r t in 1988. It is within this f r a m e w o r k that he deals w i t h issues that elucidate his Metis heritage. M c K e n z i e ' s credibility as an artist c a m e first as a w a t e r c o l o u r i s t and, in p a r t i c u l a d a s a p o r t r a i t painter. H i s groundbreaking series of portraits p o r t r a y i n g S a s k a t c h e w a n Indian Chiefs, some wearing wa r bonnets, illustrates his ability t o c a p t u r e t h e i n n e r s o u ! of the p o r t r a i t sitter. A f t e r t h e s e successes, he felt he had the f r e e d o m to confidently explore o t h e r m e d i u m s . H i s c u r r e n t v e n t u r e s into installation w o r k and t h r e e - d i m e n sional wall pieces have s t r e n g t h e n e d his artistic r e p u t a t i o n . M a n y of us will n e v e r forget his illustrations f o r D y l a n T h o m a s ' s A Child's Christmas in Wales. of Ritual, M c K e n z i e has c r e a t e d wall pieces using plexiglass and a l u m i n u m f o r the bases. F o u n d objects plus t r a ditional horsehair, feathers, felt, and animal skins are w e l d e d , b o l t e d , and glued t o these bases. Each a r t w o r k is unique and individual. M c K e n z i e sums up his latest pieces: " E v e r since I was a kid, I w a n t e d t o be an artist.
