music by Ronan Reinart Jane Coop: Incurable Romantic c o o l musical a p p r o a c h and i m p e c c a ble clarity even sent critics i n t o u n c h a r a c t e r i s t i c flurries o f ecstasy (the G/obe and Moil hailed C o o p f o r h e r "flawless c l a r i t y " ; t h e New York Times said she p o s s e s s e d " n o t only technical p r o w e s s b u t intellectual perception"). She is, by n o w , n o stranger t o t h e c o n c e r t stage, a n d -- i n a d d i t i o n t o a p r o f e s s o r s h i p at t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f British C o l u m b i a -- h a s a r é s u m é s o long, it w o u l d fill up m o s t o f this magazine. H e r r e c o r d i n g s (available o n C B C R e c o r d s and o n V a n c o u v e r based Skylark R e c o r d s ) give us a p o r t r a i t o f C o o p as a sensitive y e t s o p h i s t i c a t e d and d e m a n d i n g p e r f o r m e r . Indeed, o n e gets t h e sense o f a t o t a l pianist: thoughtful and fresh, s e c u r e and detailed, a p p r o a c h i n g material w i t h b o t h youthful v i g o r a n d a sensitivity that at t i m e s b o r d e r s o n e r o t i c . H e r n o c t u r n e s t e m p t t h e list e n e r into d e e p u n u t t e r a b l e fantasies (exactly, I'm s u r e , h o w C h o p i n w o u l d have liked t h e m ) : h e r m a z u r k a s m o v e w i t h quaint h e s i t a t i o n , like a dancer's fluctuating breath. Aside from her Chopin recordings, C o o p is also r e n o w n e d f o r h e r remarkable recordings of keyboard sonatas by H a y d n and M o z a r t a n d the w o r k s o f m o d e r n c o m p o s e r s such as Samuel Barber, Benjamin B r i t t e n , and, o f c o u r s e , t h e f e r o c i o u s Béla B a r t ó k , w h o s e use o f h a r m o n y has been d e s c r i b e d as " o f t e n bitingly dissonant." But w e needn't stray--it seems a p p r o p r i a t e t o stick w i t h C h o p i n h e r e , partly o u t o f r e s p e c t f o r C o o p ' s r e m a r k a b l e p e r f o r m a n c e parallel; partly because as I listen n o w t o t h e h o p p i n g o f C h o p i n ' s Mazurka in F sharp minor, it's difficult t o think o f anything else; and m o s t l y b e c a u s e , being c h a r a c t e r i z e d as a r o m a n t i c c o m p o s e r , C h o p i n tells us s o m e t h i n g else a b o u t t h e musician that m a s t e r s h i m . A n d Jane C o o p , like C h o p i n , was 19 years o l d w h e n she l a u n c h e d h e r career, winning the C B C National Young P e r f o r m e r s ' c o m p e t i t i o n in 1970.
