A n t h e a M a l l i n s o n has a l o n g standing i n t e r e s t in m e d i e v a l tapestry, its u s e o f imagery, a n d its p o s i t i o n " a s t h e irrefutably d o m i n a n t visual c a r r i e r of c u l t u r a l narrative." H e r r e c e n t w o r k is g r o u n d e d in p e r s o n a l e x p e r i e n c e and is less p r e m e d i t a t e d . It is a b o u t a v i s i o n -- " j o u r n e y s that w e have t o t a k e , t h a t w e did n o t c h o o s e , o r m e a n t o c h o o s e . W e have t o play the hand that w e are dealt, w e are t i e d t o the j o u r n e y . . . i t will u n f o l d , like it o r not." Yvonne Wakabayashi w o r k s with s h i b o r i and Indigo.This p r o c e s s o f folding and dyeing has b e e n refined by many g e n e r a t i o n s of Japanese a r t i s t s . W a k a b a y a s h i c o m b i n e s this process with new techniques to create w o r k s t h a t p h i l o s o p h i c a l l y a n d m e t a p h o r i c a l l y reflect h e r i n t e r e s t in w a t e r -- a l w a y s changing, m o v i n g , and creating new patterns. Lesley R i c h m o n d also c o m b i n e s o l d and n e w t e c h n i q u e s . She w o r k s w i t h s t r u c t u r e s that o c c u r in n a t u r e , visible as p a t t e r n s in the sky, e a r t h , w a t e r , and the markings o f plants and animals. She r e c r e a t e s the skins of r a r e animals d e s t r o y e d by o u r love of e x o t i c beauty. H e r richly layered w o r k s represent sensuous and s e d u c t i v e t e x t u r e d velvet fabrics. E l e o n o r Hannen's e m b r o i d e r y e x p l o r e s the myth of the s k i r t by using h a n d , m a c h i n e , and c o m p u t e r p r o c e s s e s . T h e w o r k is p a r t o f a c o l l a b o r a t i o n in p r o g r e s s w i t h w r i t e r Elizabeth D a n c o e s , w h i c h i n c o r p o rates c o m p u t e r s , t e x t i l e s , and a C D - R O M p u b l i c a t i o n -- a l l telling s t o ries i n t e r p r e t i n g " s k i r t s . " P a t t e r n s U n f o l d i n g is on view at the Seymour Art Gallery, March 2 - April I. M y o w n w o r k is also g r o u n d e d in s t o r y telling and technology. C o m p u t e r - d e s i g n e d and h a n d - w o v e n Jacquard weavings reflect A d a Lovelace's c o n t r i b u t i o n linking the Jacquard l o o m w i t h c o m p u t e r s . " T h e analytical engine w e a v e s algebraic p a t t e r n s just as the J a c q u a r d l o o m weaves f l o w e r s a n d leaves," says L o v e l a c e . T h u s , the d e s i r e f o r w e a v i n g f l o w e r s and leaves might lead t o yet uncharted territory. T h i s e x h i b i t i o n is n o t m e a n t t o p r o v i d e a single v i e w of t e x t i l e arts but instead aims t o s h o w a m e d i u m w i t h a rich history and associations. It s h o w s w h a t w e , as faculty, h o p e t o pass o n t o s t u d e n t s as distinct a p p r o a c h e s t o Textile A r t s .
