I n d u s t r y statistics, kept by t h e B C Film C o m m i s s i o n , s u p p o r t t h e a r g u m e n t that losing a s e r i e s , even a staggeringly p o p u l a r o n e s u c h as X Files, has had little i m p a c t o n the local s c e n e . In 1997, 169 p r o d u c t i o n s (repr e s e n t i n g features, m a d e - f o r - T V m o v i e s , pilots, a n i m a t i o n s , a n d d o c u mentaries) brought $630.59 million d o l l a r s t o local c o m m u n i t i e s ; in 1998 (the last y e a r f o r w h i c h statistics are available). 171 p r o d u c t i o n s spilled $ 8 0 7 . 9 9 m i l l i o n i n t o d o m e s t i c coffers. S o it s e e m s as t h o u g h t h e film business o n t h e N o r t h S h o r e is n o t just alive and w e l l but thoroughly aspiring key grips a n d gaffers t o i d e n tify t h e i r areas of i n t e r e s t a n d t a i l o r t h e i r studies a p p r o p r i a t e l y . A f t e r an initial o r i e n t a t i o n , t h e t e e n s identify t h e specific areas o f t h e business that i n t e r e s t t h e m a n d t h e n are p a i r e d w i t h w o r k i n g m e n t o r s w h o take t h e m o n - s e t a n d give t h e m an idea of w h a t w o r k i n g in film is l i k e -- t h e reality of w h i c h is o f t e n m u c h less g l a m o r o u s than a n t i c i pated. P a r t o f t h e p r o g r a m includes m a n d a t o r y p a r t i c i p a t i o n in C a p i l a n o College's two-day Introduction to the Film Industry c o u r s e , w h i c h takes its syllabus f r o m t h e B C Film Industry and is r e c o g n i z e d by IATSE. T h e d i r e c t i n g o r g a n i z a t i o n f o r the Y o u t h in Film p r o j e c t is t h e P a r k g a t e C o m m u n i t y C e n t r e , and t h e i r e x e c u tive d i r e c t o r , A n n e M o o i , is tremendously excited about starting the t h i r d r o u n d .
