A t 89, he literally w e n t walking-it w a s his t i m e . D u r i n g the m e m o r i a l I sat n e x t t o my n e p h e w Beau a n d w a t c h e d as friends and relatives said g o o d bye t o M a r t i n O n c l e and o n t h e way out, s t o p p e d t o smile t h r o u g h t h e i r tears and g r e e t Beau. It r e m i n d e d m e o f the image o f O l d F a t h e r T i m e silently slipping o u t and the N e w Year baby joyously b o u n c i n g in. Since the beginning o f t i m e , babies a n d c h i l d r e n have h e l d a p o w e r f u l place in o u r lives. U s i n g a baby t o signify the N e w Year began in G r e e c e a r o u n d 6 0 0 B C . T h e G r e e k t r a d i t i o n , at the t i m e , was t o c e l e b r a t e t h e i r g o d o f w i n e , D i o n y s u s , by p a r a d ing a baby in a basket, r e p r e s e n t i n g t h e annual r e b i r t h o f t h a t g o d as the s p i r i t o f fertility. Early Egyptian a r t also used the image o f a baby as a s y m b o l o f r e b i r t h . T i m e s may have changed, but t h r o u g h o u t the w o r l d , p e o p l e feel t h e same s e n t i m e n t . T h e N e w Year is a t i m e o f fresh starts a n d hopes, a n e w beginning. Babies a n d c h i l d r e n , in t h e i r u n e n c u m b e r e d w i s d o m , inspire a n d r e m i n d us that the w o r l d is a fascinating place and t h e r e is m u c h t o e x p l o r e and d i s c o v e r w h e n y o u l o o k w i t h My nephew Beau reminds Photo Rita Beiks me of the child in all of us.
