A n d w h y s h o u l d that be? W h a t w o u l d make the C a p i l a n o C o l l e g e e x p e r i e n c e different f r o m any n u m b e r of o t h e r music programs? M a r l o w H o l d e r , bass player f o r alternative h i p - h o p singer K i n n y S t a r r and p o p r o c k g r o u p Edgar (among was s c a t t e r e d and " l a c k e d d i r e c t i o n . " says H o l d e r . T h a t d i r e c t i o n c a m e in t h e f o r m o f jazz, w i t h its d e c a d e s o f principals and ethics, its established d i r e c t i o n . So the c o m m e r c i a l p r o g r a m b e c a m e the jazz p r o g r a m , s o m e h o w retaining t h e f u n c t i o n a l and s t u d e n t - o r i e n t e d c h a r a c t e r of t h e o l d c o m m e r c i a l p r o g r a m . T h a t is, it still l i s t e n e d t o its students because t h e s c h o o l w a s n ' t established e n o u g h t o have t o o m u c h of an 'attitude.' C h r i s Tarry, a p r i v a t e bass i n s t r u c t o r at t h e c o l l e g e a n d m e m b e r of the a c c l a i m e d jazz band M e t a l w o o d . says, " T h e r e are still a l o t o f d i f f e r e n t styles going o n o v e r t h e r e [at C a p i l a n o C o l l e g e ] . A n d t h e students still call the shots." Tarry, w h o is p r o b a b l y o n e of the busiest bass players in t h e l o w e r mainland, w o r k i n g regularly w i t h u p w a r d s of t e n bands (including A l m a L i b r e , F r a n c o i s H o u l e , cellist Peggy Lee. and his o w n s o l o p r o j e c t spanning t h r e e albums) also points o u t that, " t h e students see us [the i n s t r u c t o r s ] w o r k i n g w i t h all t h e s e different p r o j e c t s and they k n o w t h e y have t o learn different styles t o o . " B u t d o e s t h e f o c u s s e d study of jazz infringe o n t h e study of o t h e r styles? A b s o l u t e l y not. A c c o r d i n g t o A n d r é Lachance, a n o t h e r p r i v a t e bass i n s t r u c t o r at t h e college, the intensified study of jazz helps students t o pick up d i f f e r e n t styles. Says Lachance. " t h e t r u t h is that jazz is the best way to learn. I mean, if y o u can learn jazz h a r m o n y y o u can handle p o p harmony, o r any o t h e r h a r m o n y f o r that matter." W h a t a b o u t the irony that m o s t of the jazz pioneers, p e o p l e like John C o l t r a n e , T h e l o n i u s M o n k , Miles Davis. Jaco Pastorius, o r D i z z y G i l e s p i e , never c o m p l e t e d degrees themselves? A t t h e t o p of P u r c e l l Way, n o r t h of the S e y m o u r Parkway, t h e streets w i n d into a m o d e s t array of parking lots and sleek m o d e r n b u i l d ings.This is C a p i l a n o C o l l e g e , the first s t o p f o r many y o u n g m e n and w o m e n o n t h e i r way t o life in t h e ' r e a l w o r l d . ' T h e college offers, in a d d i t i o n t o its e x t e n s i v e range of acad e m i c and t e c h n i c a l p r o g r a m s , f o u r music p r o g r a m s : a t w o - y e a r D i p l o m a of M u s i c , a t w o - y e a r D i p l o m a in Jazz Studies, a f o u r - y e a r D e g r e e in Jazz Studies and a four-year D e g r e e in M u s i c Therapy.That's fine, y o u say, but a n y o n e can refer t o t h e college c a l e n d a r - available at any local library o r by o r d e r f r o m t h e c o l l e g e i t s e l f but t h e r e is m o r e t o this s t o r y than just c o u r s e d e s c r i p t i o n s ; t h e r e is m o r e t o t h e s c h o o l than t h e sum of it's c o u r s e s . A f t e r all, many musicians that have g r a d u a t e d f r o m the C a p i l a n o C o l l e g e music p r o g r a m are o n fire, b u r n i n g the local m u s i c scene. Just l o o k at J e r r y W o n g ( D a m n t h e Diva), t h e Soul S t r e a m Band (regular p e r f o r m e r s at Bar N o n e ) , P e o p l e Playing M u s i c , guitar player Kelly numerous others), attended Capilano C o l l e g e f r o m 1991 t o 1995. H e thinks the s c h o o l sticks o u t because it's young. "It still listens t o its s t u dents," he says. " A n d w h e n y o u listen t o y o u r students, they get m o t i vated." W h e n he a t t e n d e d , however, H o l d e r says, " t h e s c h o o l was in t r a n sition. E v e r y o n e was a bit confused." T h e t r a n s i t i o n was o u t of w h a t was called the c o m m e r c i a l p r o g r a m - a study in c o m m e r c i a l music f u n d a m e n tals i n t e n d e d t o p r e p a r e students f o r the life of a p r o f e s s i o n a l musician. T h e commercial program was very practical and s t u d e n t - o r i e n t e d but w i t h o u t a refined dogma the program D o the students n o t find this daunting? A r e they n o t s o m e t i m e s inspired t o t h r o w away t h e i r b o o k s and t h u m b their noses at their teachers, saying,'I will innovate!
