But in By Land and Sea, Bancroft has r e t u r n e d t o nature as genealogy, o n c e again drawing o n personal h i s t o r y as a p r i m a r y s o u r c e f o r her w o r k . O n e o f t h e m o s t timely and c o n t e n d e d issues of the late 2 0 t h vidual a m o n g o t h e r s and w i t h i n a p e r s o n a l and social history. H e r o w n v i e w s are m a d e up of the e x p e r i e n c e of being an artist, a t o u r i s t , a d e s c e n dent, a resident, a w o m a n -- a n d each v i e w has its o w n distinct c o n v e n t i o n s . T h e landscape t r a d i t i o n in visual art in C a n a d a is a s t r o n g o n e , m o s t p r o m i n e n t l y t h r o u g h the G r o u p of Seven, but also in early p h o t o g r a p h y such as the w o r k by W i l l i a m N o t m a n c h r o n i c l i n g the passage f o r t h e C a n a d i a n Pacific Railway.These w o r k s have been used t o establish a specifically C a n a d i a n identity.The m i l l e n n i u m p r o v i d e s an o p p o r t u n i t y t o b o t h c e l e brate and t r a n s f o r m the landscape t r a d i t i o n , o p e n i n g a space f o r multiple readings that e n r i c h and destabilize the idea of national identity. T h i s e x h i b i t i o n of Bancroft's beautiful landscape images revisits h e r o w n family history, w h i c h is, like that of many C a n a d i a n s , a h i s t o r y of migrat i o n . In this instance, the migration is f r o m S o u t h Russia ( n o w U k r a i n e ) t o Saskatchewan w i t h the G e r m a n speaking M e n n o n i t e c o m m u n i t y , and f r o m t h e Highlands of S c o t l a n d t o M a n i t o b a and ultimately t o British C o l u m b i a . Ideas of " p r o s p e c t a n d r e f u g e " d i s c u s s e d in l a n d s c a p e a r c h i t e c t u r e c o n s i d e r the desire for conventional l a n d s c a p e v i e w s , w h i c h a l l o w us t o see w i t h o u t being s e e n , a n d t o i m a g ine s o m e safe and p r i v a t e place in w h i c h t o situate o u r s e l v e s . L a n d is t r a d i t i o n a l l y a s o u r c e of p a s s i o n a t e i d e n t i f i c a t i o n : of h o m e , h i s t o r y , sacred sites, patriotic boundaries. Today, h o w e v e r , t h e r e may be many claims o n any n u m b e r of l a n d s c a p e s f o r any i n d i v i d u a l o r g r o u p ; c u r r e n t t h i n k i n g i n c o r p o r a t e s this d i v e r s i t y with respect to o u r relationship t o place.
