A b o o k launch will be held o n Saturday, S e p t e m b e r I I, w h e n , a s c u r a t o r and a u t h o r of the b o o k , I will give a public talk a b o u t the man and his life. C h o w D o n g H o y w o r k e d himself away f r o m the coast by 1905. In the w i n t e r of 1909, after a season of limited success w i t h mining in Barkerville, H o y t o o k up a c a m e r a and began t o take portraits of o t h e r C h i n e s e immigrants in the vicinity. H e printed these o n t o postcards and sold t h e m back t o t h e sitters s o that they might send their likenesses h o m e t o loved ones as a reassuring gesture of survival and possible success. W h e n H o y m o v e d t o nearby Q u e s n e l in 1913, his clientele g r e w t o include the N a t i v e and C a u c a s i a n p e o p l e in that area. By a p p r o x i m a t e l y 1925, H o y had created a visual r e c o r d of o v e r 1,400 images, w h i c h d o c u m e n t e d the multicultural milieu of the p e o p l e in C a r i b o o , British C o l u m b i a . T h e e x h i b i t i o n , first Son: Portraits by C. D. Hoy. will r e p r e s e n t a c r o s s s e c t i o n of his w o r k , w h i c h a l s o includes a n u m b e r of s e l f - p o r t r a i t s , and will highlight the unique p o s i t i o n H o y o c c u p i e s in o u r c o n t i n u i n g e x p l o r a t i o n of C a n a d i a n p h o t o g r a p h y and the h i s t o r y of this p r o v i n c e . H o y , w o r k i n g at a t i m e w h e n the m a j o r i t y o f image m a k e r s w e r e C a u c a s i a n , has p r o v i d e d an alternative visual r e c o r d of p e o p l e w h o w e r e often s i d e l i n e d , e x o t i c i z e d , o r i g n o r e d by this C a u c a s i a n majority. H o y ' s vision is o n e of the v i b r a n t and changing C h i n e s e and N a t i v e c o m m u n i t i e s in t h e i n t e r i o r of B C . A t t h e c l o s e of the e x h i b i t i o n tour, all of t h e p h o t o g r a p h s will be donated to the Barkerville Historic Town Archive collection. First Son: T he first s o n of a C h i n e s e family is often b u r d e n e d w i t h the r e s p o n - sibility of e n s u r i n g the well-being of family m e m b e r s . In C h i n a at the beginning of this century, t h e r e w e r e a n u m b e r of f a c t o r s that c o l l i d e d t o m a k e this t i m e - h o n o u r e d duty difficult, if n o t i m p o s s i b l e , t o fulfill. A s such, first sons e m i g r a t e d by the thousands t o v a r i o u s foreign s h o r e s in an a t t e m p t t o s u p p o r t e x t e n d e d families and self. C h o w D o n g H o y was o n e such p e r s o n w h o i m m i g r a t e d t o the w e s t e r n s h o r e s of C a n a d a in 1902 and will be t h e focus o f a m a j o r e x h i b i t i o n and b o o k early this S e p t e m b e r .
