T h e I s u m m e r of ' 9 9 . T h e last s u m m e r of the 2 0 t h century. " I n v i n c i b l e S u m m e r s " a r e c r e a t e d n o t s o m u c h by w h a t y o u d o but by w h a t y o u e x p e r i e n c e . T h e y are invincible b e c a u s e t h e y have t h e p o w e r t o c o n q u e r d a r k days, taking y o u back t o a t i m e o f bliss, c o n t e n t m e n t , laughter, d r e a m s , and inspiration. I am o n e of t h o s e f o r t u n a t e p e o p l e w h o has a t r e a s u r e c h e s t full o f Invincible S u m m e r s . A n d after reading a b o u t y o u n g a u t h o r P a r n e e t D i l a w a r i (page 23) and K a m i l a h and Erin T h o r p e ' s s u m m e r reading a d v e n t u r e s (page 22), o n e "Invincible S u m m e r " in p a r t i c u l a r c o m e s t o m i n d . I w a s 13 o r 14 years o l d and I had just d i s c o v e r e d L o u i s a May A l c o t t ' s b o o k Little Women in my m o t h e r ' s linen c l o s e t . A s a c r e d s u m m e r ritual w a s b o r n . E v e r y day, clutching t h e pale lilac h a r d c o v e r b o o k t o my c h e s t , I set o u t f o r my aunt's w o o d l a n d g a r d e n . T h e r e , in a hidden g r o t t o , I leaned against a large m o s s - c o v e r e d b o u l d e r and fell i n t o t h e pages of my b o o k . E x c e p t f o r t h e c r e a t u r e s of the f o r e s t WW 1 t: B. O'Leary and t h e c h a r a c t e r s in my head, I w a s a l o n e ; my family still r e m e m b e r s t h e " d i r e " c o n s e q u e n c e s o f i n t r u d i n g u p o n my s a n c t u a r y ( r e m e m b e r , I was a 13-year-old girl). W h e n I r e t u r n e d h o m e s o b b i n g t h e day that B e t h , o n e of the Little W o m e n , d i e d , they a c k n o w l e d g e d t h e tragedy and r e s p e c t e d my space as I g r i e v e d . A f t e r finishing my b o o k , I s p e n t h o u r s by the w a t e r ' s side w i t h a n o t e b o o k and p e n . I d e c i d e d I was d e s t i n e d t o be a w r i t e r -- a n d a t o m b o y like the b o o k ' s lead c h a r a c t e r Jo. T h i s s u m m e r . I intend t o find a n e w s a n c t u a r y w h e r e I can take my newly b o r n n e p h e w B e a u . T o g e t h e r w e ' l l take in the s o u n d s and sights o f s u m m e r as w e l l as the a d v e n t u r e s of W i n n i e - t h e - P o o h . It's n o t h a r d t o c r e a t e an "Invincible S u m m e r " ; t h e N o r t h S h o r e is rich w i t h p e o p l e and places that inspire.
