O v e r the y e a r s , its beautiful g r o u n d s and w a t e r f r o n t l o c a t i o n have p r o v i d e d a stunning v e n u e f o r many o u t d o o r events. B u t t h e F e r r y Building is best k n o w n as an a r t gallery. T h o u s a n d s of p e o p l e visit the F e r r y B u i l d i n g t o v i e w t h e first-class e x h i b i t s , t o m e e t the artists, and t o listen t o l e c t u r e s o n v a r i o u s facets of t h e arts. O n the N o r t h Vancouver p r e m i s e s , A F K offers after s c h o o l art classes as w e l l as gallery p r o g r a m s f o r g r a d e five s t u d e n t s . T h e r e are also several e n r i c h m e n t p r o g r a m s p r e s e n t e d t h r o u g h o u t the c o m m u n i t y . M a c D o n a l d says that A r t i s t s f o r K i d s s e r v e s 5,000 e l e m e n t a r y and s e c o n d a r y s c h o o l s t u d e n t s each year. H u g h e s , M o l l y L a m b B o b a k , and T a e k e o T a n a b e , " a l l C a n a d i a n treasures," in t h e w o r d s of Bill M a c D o n a l d . L o c a t e d at the L e o M a r s h a l l C u r r i c u l u m C e n t r e in N o r t h V a n c o u v e r , t h e t r u s t is a selffunding v e n t u r e w h i c h exists s o l e l y t h r o u g h the sale o f a r t w o r k by its p a t r o n artists. Bill M a c D o n a l d , A r t s f o r K i d s managing d i r e c t o r , states t h a t this o n e - o f - k i n d o p e r a t i o n " i s built o n t h e g e n e r o s i t y of t h e artists." Its gallery h o u s e s o n e of the finest t h e 1998 F A N S a w a r d . T h e paintings, prints, and a s s e m blages w i l l all d e p i c t British C o l u m b i a landscapes. A f e w of t h e pieces o n display w i l l be Smith's Gambler Island Stream, a vivid acrylic piece w i t h lush b r u s h w o r k ; H u g h e s ' The Mill at Mesachie Lake, a realistic w o r k w h i c h was originally a j o u r n a l s k e t c h ; L a m b Bobak's Northern Beach, a bright " p a i n t e r l y " image of s w i m m e r s by t h e sea;Tanabe's stark and m y s t e r i o u s Barkley Sound Broken Islands II: and Shives' w o o d and steel assemblage entitled Owl in Winter. M a c D o n a l d o b s e r v e s that the five artists "all have a unique and e x t r a o r d i n a r y vision of the British C o l u m b i a landscape." It f o l l o w s , t h e n , that this will be a unique and e x t r a o r d i n a r y show.
