T h e N o r t h S h o r e A r t s C o m m i s s i o n is busy planning S y m p o s i u m '99 f o r January 23. 1999,at the Lucas C e n t r e . A s p a r t of t h e N o r t h S h o r e Arts Commission's commitment to arts d e v e l o p m e n t , t h e r e is n o regist r a t i o n o r a d m i s s i o n fee f o r participants. A l l y o u have t o d o is p r e - r e g i s t e r and t u r n up f o r an e n j o y able and e d u c a t i o n a l day o f lively discussion. Last January's S y m p o s i u m b r o u g h t t o g e t h e r 150 artists and s t a k e h o l d e r s in t h e arts i n d u s t r y t o exchange, share, listen, and suggest. C a l l e d H o w to Get Rich in the Arts-- w i t h all possible i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s of that t h e m e -- i t was hugely successful w i t h m u c h feedback and positive c o m m e n t s . T h e negative c o m m e n t s and suggestions f o r i m p r o v e m e n t w e r e minor, but valid, and are being considered for Symposium '99. T h e t h e m e is n o t y e t c o n f i r m e d but w i l l be along t h e lines of it Happen. Making N e w t o the day-long event w i l l be t h r e e b l o c k s of b r e a k o u t s e s s i o n s -- a s many as e i g h t -- s o that m o s t of the activity will o c c u r in smaller g r o u p s than last t i m e . Each session will take place in t w o separate b l o c k s so t h e risk o f p a r t i c i p a n t s ' having t o make a difficult c h o i c e will be lessened. P r e - r e g i s t r a t i o n , including c h o i c e o'f sessions, is necessary so the organizing c o m m i t tee k n o w s h o w many p e o p l e are p a r t i c i p a t i n g in w h i c h sessions. T h e Taxing P r o b l e m , E n d e a v o u r Co-ops, The North Shore Arts C o m m i s s i o n has a vision of N o r t h Vancouver District and C i t y being the arts capital of C a n a d a , d r a w i n g v i s i t o r s in increasing n u m b e r s . O t h e r have d o n e it, w h y n o t us? W e have a high n u m b e r o f r e n o w n e d artists and a r i c h h i s t o r y of artistic e n d e a v o u r and a c c o m p l i s h ment. So the 1999 S y m p o s i u m will be designed especially f o r and m o t i v a t e d by o u r d e v e l o p i n g arts industry.
