H e has illustrated t h e w o r k s of such a u t h o r s as Eric N i c o l . A l a n F o t h e r i n g h a m , and Stanley B u r k e , and has had published t h r e e b o o k s o f his o w n . H e has also w o n the Canadian National N e w s p a p e r A w a r d f o r political c a r t o o n i n g a r e c o r d six times. "I liked t h e way the p l o t kept turning," P e t e r s o n said, talking a b o u t the b o o k in the W e s t V a n c o u v e r s t u d i o behind his h o m e . "I liked t h e way it c o u l d be read o n different levels. T h e n , t o o , I t h o u g h t it was p r e t t y funny. M y m i d d l e son K i t and I built the first f e e d e r w h e n he was in G r a d e Eight. I guess that's w h e r e the idea f o r t h e b o o k c a m e f r o m . It c a m e in t h r o u g h the w i n d o w w i t h the b i r d song. Peterson. and, in West 0 Vancouver, at the Bookstall. I had b e e n w r e s t l i n g w i t h t h e Fairly G o o d C a n a d i a n N o v e l and was fresh o u t of ideas. So I w r o t e a fivepage fantasy a b o u t t h e birds that visit the feeder, t h i n k i n g my eldest s o n c o u l d read it o n e evening t o his sons. I even used my g r a n d s o n s ' names f o r that of t h e t w o main c h a r a c t e r s . L a t e r w h e n I read it over, I saw it was just t h e g e r m of a s t o r y that c o u l d be d e v e l o p e d i n t o s o m e t h i n g m o r e . A m o n t h and 16,000 w o r d s later I finished Raymond's Raindance, of a challenge. H a r r i l l d e l i b e r a t e l y c h o s e t h e m o s t n o n d e s c r i p t local b i r d as the hero, and giving h i m a personality t o o k s o m e doing." H o w well Peterson s u c c e e d e d in his d r a w ings is s h o w n in the s t r i k i n g c o v e r o f the b o o k . T h e c o v e r and b o o k design w e r e d o n e by B u r n a b y artist/printmaker Susan Gransby. W h e n both P e t e r s o n and I balked at signing a c o n t r a c t w i t h a publisher, w e d e c i d e d t o self-publish. T h e difficulty isn't p u b lishing, it's finding a d i s t r i b u t o r w h o will take o n a o n e - t i t l e publisher. I w a n t e d t o c r e ate a s i t u a t i o n t h a t dealt w i t h the m e e t i n g of city and n a t u r e t h a t o c c u r s in U p p e r L y n n . T h e r e ' s a c i v i lized s o u t h side a n d a w i l d n o r t h side t o F r o m m e M o u n t a i n , w h e r e prey and p r e d a t o r live together, c h e e k by j o w l , o n the edge of suburbia. I wanted to show h o w the food chain w o r k s and I w a n t e d it t o be m o r e than the a n i m a t e d g o o that's fed t o kids in the W a l t D i s n e y v e r sions of life o n earth.
