M i x e d - m e d i a w o r k s by T a m m y P i l o n and M a r g a r e t h a B o o t s m a c o u n t e r this N a t i v e image yet still e v o k e an a b s t r a c t e s s e n c e of s a l m o n . B o o t s m a ' s w o r k uses a p h o tographic transfer of a s a l m o n o n a t e x t u r e d surface painted a w a t e r y green. O t h e r w o r k s c r e a t e d w i t h the image of the s a l m o n are b o t h r e p r e sentative and abstract. A g a t a T e o d o r o w i c z - B e b e l has m a d e an e l e gant wall hanging using fabric, small r i v e r r o c k s , a n d paint. C e r a m i c artists K e i t h and C e l i a Rice have c o n t r i b u t e d a p i e c e utilizing w e a t h e r e d w o o d and little c e r a m i c s a l m o n adhered to the w o o d with w i r e -- a veritable s c h o o l o f s a l m o n c o n t a i n e d , c o u n t e d , yet free. O t h e r artists exhibiting in the s h o w include s c u l p t o r s J o h n D e a s e y and Ian R o w l e s , painter Sharalee Rehehr, and g l a s s b l o w e r L a w r e n c e R u s k i n . T h e r e will also be an installat i o n by M y r a E a d i e . T h e e n t i r e e x h i b i t o n c e installed e v o k e s a spiritual s a c r e d c i r c l e . A n o t h e r i m p o r t a n t e l e m e n t of Our Salmon, Our Children, One Earth is t h e w o r k o f m o r e than 1,000 s c h o o l c h i l d r e n . T h e public can f o l l o w a " s t r e a m " of children's paintings o f s a l m o n , w h i c h w i l l b e installed along t h e e x t e r i o r glass w i n d o w s of C o q u i t l a m ' s Evergreen Cultural Centre's visual a r t studios and t h e a t r e l o b b y leading t o t h e a r t gallery. Papais states the e x h i b i t is t o " b r i d g e s gaps b e t w e e n c h i l d r e n and adults, c o m m u n i t y and industry, and c u l t u r e s w i t h i n o u r cities." In 1989. for instance, R a i n c o a s t B o o k s released a p u b l i c a t i o n resulting f r o m the c o l l a b o r a t i o n o f artists such as R o b e r t B a t e m a n . T o n i O n l e y . J a c k Shadbolt, and G o r d o n S m i t h . T h i s g r o u p o f artists travelled t o the C a r m a n a h Valley and c r e a t e d w o r k s o f a r t t o raise a w a r e n e s s o f t h e p r o p o s e d l o g ging o f this virgin forest. T h e result was public o u t c r y and the p r e s e r v a t i o n of t h e C a r m a n a h Valley. In t h e same spirit. M a r i n a Papais has s p e n t t w o years c u r a t i n g and e n c o u r a g i n g artists t o participate in a c o l l a b o r a t i o n and e x h i b i t called Our Salmon, Our Children, One Eorth.This e x h i b i t i o n had its inaugural o p e n i n g at t h e R o u n d h o u s e C o m m u n i t y C e n t r e in May. in June it travelled t o P o r t M o o d y ' s G o l d e n Spike's D a y s , a n d f r o m July 2 t o A u g u s t 23 it w i l l be r e m o u n t e d at C o q u i t l a m ' s Evergreen Cultural C e n t r e . T h e e x h i b i t will c o n t i n u e t o u r i n g until it finally r e a c h e s t h e N o r t h S h o r e -- W e s t V a n c o u v e r ' s F e r r y Building in S e p t e m b e r 1999 as part o f the C o h o Festival. M a r i n a Papais is an internationally r e n o w n e d artist, a r t e d u c a t o r , f r e e lance c u r a t o r , and a r e s i d e n t of N o r t h V a n c o u v e r . H e r catalyst: e n v i ronmental concerns surrounding the vanishing s a l m o n p o p u l a t i o n in B r i t i s h C o l u m b i a . Statistics C a n a d a cites that unless care is taken t o p r e s e r v e this species, the last s a l m o n w i l l r u n in o u r r i v e r s in 2 0 years. N o t o n l y have Papais and c o - c u r a t o r s Lizanne F i s h e r and Sharalee R e g e h r s u c c e e d e d in addressing this e n v i r o n m e n t a l c o n c e r n , they have also g a t h e r e d t o g e t h e r an i m p r e s s i v e array o f p r o fessional a r t i s t s -- m a n y f r o m t h e N o r t h Shore.
