CALL IOK VISUAL ARTISTS!! or she was 21 years old. So when young Emsley became a man. he needed a god or, as he says, he thought he might be missing out on something. He made the rounds of the more traditional religions, from Baptist and Catholic to Anglican and Jewish. But it wasn't until he started looking into more alternative groups that he discovered the Theosophical Society. "It was not a religious group or sect," Emsley says. "It was a small group of people interested in enlarging their intellectual and spiritual horizons." One of its members and the leader of a Sunday youth group was Group o f Seven member Lawren Harris. " M y brief Sunday afternoon encounters with Harris opened new fields. Besides rubbing shoulders with friends, I found myself rubbing minds with Socrates, Whitman. Plotinus, and Emerson. It was a new experience and I am indebted to Harris for setting me on a self-learning track which I continue to the present day." The same track also kept Emsley from ever considering attending art school. "They are dogmatic and your imaginative ideas and impulses are sometimes bridled." he says. " A n d I needed to do what I wanted to do." Besides a brief introduction to sculpting in the 1940s. Emsley is completely selftaught. But then he loves working with wood. He understands wood. "Everybody and everything has been so technologized and computerized." he says. "We've lost a feeling for the good earth. A n d we need something that reminds us there is nature out there -- that we are all a part of nature." A l Emsley has more than 200 pieces of the good earth at his home in Edgemont Village. ~ Have you ever considered renting your art? It is a great opportunity for exposure!
