Storytelling, w h i c h had always been part o f everyday life, became one o f many healing activities. " M y whole life has been oral tradition at home, with elders, and at potlatches," says George. "Potlatches on the West Coast are like our parliament. They e n c o m pass everything that affects our lives: business, land allocation, fishing. C h i l d r e n are brought i n . part of it, trained to be quiet and listen. It's all o r a l . " The future lies in the modern w o r l d and C h i e f L e o n a r d George recognizes that the First Nations people "must use our past experiences as good reasons to succeed. W e must learn to become hunters o f the city, in the way our ancestors were hunters o f the forest: by approaching everyone and everything with respect, never taking more than we need, always g i v i n g back something, and always being thankful." To hunt i n the city C h i e f George needed tools, so he created the C h i e f D a n George M e m o r i a l Foundation. Its goal is to train First Nations people in the film industry to help change the image o f Indians. "There are three great oppressive forces against Indians: government, religion, and H o l l y w o o d , " says George. "There was no use c o m plaining, so I rolled up m y sleeves." The foundation's purpose is to help deal with the H o l l y w o o d tale spinners; to write, produce, and direct films to show the Indian perspective and tell their stories. C h i e f George was the executive producer for " H o n o u r o f A l l . " a documentary about a band in the Interior that went from being 100% alcoholic to 100% sober in one generation. A current project, produced by Loretta Todd, is a documentary about the life o f C h i e f D a n George.
