community by Marjorie Woods Send in the Clowns! The years 1860 to 1920 saw the golden age of the circus when clowns tumbled and pantomimed their way through performances. "Knockabouts," in which clowns tripped and fell over each other, were very popular. Also, during this time, two types of modern clown made their appearance. One was the neat whiteface whose make-up, as the name implies, uses neat, small facial features and wears elaborate and colourful costumes. In contrast, the Auguste uses exaggerated features on a flesh-coloured face and usually wears baggy costumes and has big feet. This clown is always pulling pranks on the whiteface clown and runs around with bottles, squirters, and other paraphernalia. A third type of modern clown is the character clown, and those of us who remember Red Skelton are familiar with the hobo who is always sad. His sooty face is lighter around the eyes to signify the wiping away of grime picked up while riding the trails as tramps used to do. He wears patched clothes and generally looks down at the heels. Bad things are always happening to this clown, but such misfortune is hilarious to the audience because of the clown's reactions. Clowns come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: they can make you laugh, sc Puppet Fest takes place at the Delbook Recreation Centre from noon to 4 pm 987information. on October / 9. It is because of this ability to entertain that the Gastown Alley Clowns have been invited to join the Talking Hands Puppetry Theatre on October 19 at the Delbrook Recreation Centre. Since the first laugh at the beginning of time, clowns have been around in one form or another to lighten the darker moments of life. The pharaohs of ancient Egypt and Roman emperors all kept clowns. By the beginning of the Middle Ages, court jesters came on the scene, in the service of Europe's kings and queens. In the 1500s, comedia dell'arte was born in Italy. The fool-jester of this style evolved into clowns much as we know today. The wily trickster. Harlequin, came from this tradition. Woods works for the Talking Puppetry Theatre.
