awards Local Artists are Honored in this Year's FANS Awards Luman and Arlyn Coad are the creative forces behind Coad Canada Puppets, one of the world's leading puppet theatre troupes which has literally toured the world. The troupe has won ten important puppetry awards, including First Prize at the 1977 International Festival of PuppetActors in Poland and the Puppeteers of America President's Award. The American Centre of 1'Union Internationale de la Marionnette has awarded the Coads five Citations of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry. Each year the Coads create a new half-hour, one-man puppet show which tours for eight months to an audience of over 100,000. eo proudly celebrates those ties which are a tribute to the strength of the North Shore arts community. Jean Coulthard, of West Vancouver, started composing music when she was just 11 years old. and today, in her 89th year, maintains her active and prolific career. In 1978, Coulthard was recognized for her contributions to Canadian music and was awarded the Order of Canada and made a Freeman of the City of Vancouver. She won Composer of the Year by P R O Canada in 1984, received an honorary doctorate degree from U B C in 1988. and in 1996 was named the first recipient of the Woman of the Year for Women in Music. It might be on the C B C or across a festival meadow, but you'll always recognize the unique, intense guitar playing, soulful singing, and original song-writing of Roy Forbes. He has recorded albums such as The Human Kind and Almost Overnight and more recently has worked in collaboration on two CDs with Shari Ulrich and Bill Henderson as U H F (Ulrich, Henderson, and Forbes). He has also composed songs for Sesame Street and recently scored soundtracks such as director Nertie Wild's last documentary Blockade and the gritty six-part T V mini-series Eve Level. October 10, at the newly constructed Capilano College theatre. The North Shore Arts Commission created the Fund for the Arts on the North Shore (FANS) award in 1995 as a way to recognize and honour nationally renowned North Shore artists. The fund itself was established to support the development of arts and artists here on the North Shore. Previous recipients of F A N S Awards include actor Robert Clothier and painter Elizabeth Smiley, each of who received a glass sculpture. This year's award sculpture has been created by Marina Papais and Rick Harry. Guests at FANS Night will be treated to a diverse celebration of arts on the North Shore, featuring a visual an show, live performances, an auction, and a cocktail reception.
