attract people back to the theatre. "This is a l l about c o n n e c t i n g up audiences and artists o f c r o s s d i s c i p l i n e s , because it's not just dance. It's music and theatre and visual arts and it's connecting people up in a performance setting because it's one of the few rituals we have left. I think there's a real backlash against sitting in front of a screen...be it a computer screen or a television screen. I think people really want to do things and express themselves and do it with other people. A n d I think we're addressing a hunger that is just now being realized." Together, the artists involved in the Project have found a common voice. "Because everything is occurring at Performance Works, you get all kinds people mingling, who might not [otherwise] meet, and that generates a special kind of energy of its own." Ultimately, the Kiss Project embodies Judith Marcuse's vision to join Vancouver artists together and bring some hope and solace to our community's wounded sense of culture. -~ The Kiss Project encompasses over 60 events, many o f which encourage public participation. · Workshops and lecture-demonstrations run January 1 9 February 23. These are designed for beginners, some of whom may have the appreciation for an art form but would like hands-on experience before pursuing classes. Some of Vancouver's foremost teachers w i l l be leading these workshops and presenting their craft in a most accessible way. There is a wide range to choose from including belly dancing, African drumming, and the art of c l o w n ing. Some weekend workshops are for adult-accompanied children. · A variety of theme-related, weekend evening concerts include a flamenco presentation, an audience-friendly rhythm fest a la Sal Ferreras. a performance highlighting a cross-section of young, local performers, and evenings featuring singer/song writer Stephen Fearing and dancer Tedd Robinson. · The workshops are at the E m i l y Carr Institute, and the evenings performances are at Performance Works.
