Millerchip is probably as well-known for his "Curtain C a l l " column in the North Shore News as he is for directing plays. '"Curtain C a l l ' has tended to focus more and more on the North Shore and less and less on professional productions." Millerchip says. "The column hooks into the North Shore personality or artist." A s a theatre critic. Millerchip believes it's important to distinguish between community theatre and professional theatre. "If you apply professional standards to community theatre, many reviews are going to be quite critical." he explains, "so you have to find a way to be honest and yet balance that with some positive assessment." With his many years of community theatre experience. Millerchip knows that only a high level of commitment and effort allows community theatre to flourish. Asked what audiences can expect from his production of Glengarry Glen Ross. Millerchip politely avoids being nailed down: "Until you get in and direct something, you never really know. I don't believe, what a play is truly about." Directing is the process of distilling all the ideas of the play down to "one crystal clear point." towards which a director steers the entire production. But the process begun by the director isn't complete until there's an audience. "It's for the audience to determine what Mamet is saying."
