Elizabeth Smily. E R . S . A . . F.C.A., visual arts career began in England where she had a successful one-person show at the famous Studio Club in Piccadilly in 1950. At this time she was commissioned to paint celebrities such as Marlene Dietrick. James Stewart. Trevor Howard. Odette Churchill and even a Nigerian king. After moving to Canada in 1952. Smily worked with the Group o f Seven's Arthur Lismer and was later recognized as one o f Canada's best portrait painters. Her work has been exhibited in Montreal (where in 1965 she participated in the 70th Annual Montreal Museum o f Fine Art group show), Toronto. Ottawa and Vancouver. Smily became the first woman president o f the Federation o f Canadian Artists in 1989 and more recently had a portrait o f the Queen Mother (pictured left) accepted into the Royal Portrait Collection by H . M . Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Smily is currently working on her autobiography and retrospective due out soon. A n n M o r t i f e e has a remarkably successful and diverse career. Her singing credits include the Closing Ceremonies o f the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, and concert tours with Harry Belafonte, Ramsey Lewis and John Denver. Her writing credits include When the Rains Come, a South African musical, A Rose Is A Rose, a children's opera commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company, Journey to Kairos, an international award winning one-woman show and The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She has used her music as a healing tool to drive herself and others down a path o f self-discovery and her ongoing workshops include Healing Journey, Compassion and the Healing Power o f M u s i c and Releasing Your Inner Voice. In 1992 Mortifee was awarded the Order o f Canada for outstanding contributions to the performing and healing arts and the Y W C A Woman o f Distinction Award.
