This year's four finalists are Michael Conway Raker, Daniel Izzard.Ann Mortifee and Elizabeth Smily. Find out more about these local artists and FANS Night. The Healer, by North Shore artists Marina Papais and Xwa Lack Tun (Rick Harry) will be presented to this year's winner of the FANS Award. by Gloria Loree T h e second annual FANS Night will be a gala celebration featuring exciting performances by local artists and an auction of work by North Shore visual artists. Proceeds from the evening will go towards the building of the FANS account, to support the development of the arts on the North Shore. This year the award winner will receive an exquisite glass sculpture, pictured above. The artists are Marina Papais and her partner. Xwa Lack Tun (Rick Harry) who live and work in Tun's ancestral home on the Squamish Nation Capilano Reserve. The award, entitled The Healer, is rich in symbolic meanirfg. "This piece represents the man who walks with the great Spirit, represented by the cloak of the Thunderbird on his shoulders." says Papais. "The Eagle is the witness of the things that transpire upon the Earth and the one who carries the information to the Creator. This headress. therefore, depicts clear perspective and deep insight, as the Eagle flies very high and sees everything. The child is comforted within the cloak of the Healer, who carries as his protection the love and wisdom of the Creator. The leaves are symbolic of growth and healing." The N S A C will be honoured to present The Healer to one of the featured four finalists on October 8. Michael Conway Baker, of North Vancouver, is considered to be a leading composer in manyfields.His over 80 film, television and video music scores owe much of their distinctive and award winning success to his extensive background in writing symphonic concert music. He has over 110 concert works to his credit and has received a Juno award for Best Classical Composition on recordings. His latest award nomination (1994 Genie) is for Best Original Song for the feature film Savage Land written in collaboration with his wife, manager and lyricist. Penny Anne Baker. He also has three Genies for Feature Film and an ACTRA (Gemini) for Best TV Series Score. Among the many orchestras for which he has written, orchestrated and recorded scores are the Vancouver. Toronto. Munich and London symphonies. Daniel Izzard. F.C.A.. an essentially self-taught artist, is an impressionist with a bold and emotional approach to his subjects. He primarily paints landscapes, seascapes, still life, portraits and nudes. Izzard has painted professionally for 41 years. He has travelled by canoe on painting trips to remote areas of Canada, as well to Europe. Asia. Latin America and North America for inspirational subject material. Over the the past 4.1 years. Izzard has had 58 one-man exhibitions. In 1982. H.M. Queen Elizabeth II accepted a large canvas of Izzard's entitled Mountain Mists. Whistler. BC. In 1988. he was recognized by the Mayor and Council as one of West Vancouver;' Outstanding Achievers over the past 75 years, and in 1991 he received a commemorative medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.
