Starwalk, plaques in the sidewalk along Granville Street between Nelson and Georgia, honours those who have made an outstanding contribution to entertainment in British Columbia, across Canada and around the world. Two recent North Shore recipients of this award are Mont) McFarlane (in his early years in radio, left) and Ann Mortifee (read more about Ann on page 4). McFarlane had his first radio job at C B C Winnipeg when the highlight of the day was doing the hog prices and one of his later radio shows was a nightly talkshow from the Georgia Hotel Lobby...but there are too many highlights to list them all. à West Vancouver resident Jean Coulthard. above, will be presented with the first Women in Music Distinction Award at this year's Women in Music Festival. September 28. Coulthard is considered to be the first West Coast composer to have gained worldwide recognition. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and Freeman of the City of Vancouver in 1978. Volume 10 of RCI's Anthology of Canadian Music is devoted to Coulthard's compositions. In 1984 she was named composer of the year by PRO Canada. Festival info: 684-9461. Blanche Howard. B.Sc, C.A., was recently awarded a Canada Council Arts Grant " B . " (awarded by competition). Howard's award is to help her complete her novel-inprogress which is about an ageing woman. The novel came out of a short story, Chaos, which was published in the Queen's Quarterly. In 1957. Maclean's published the first short story Howard ever wrote. She recently co-authored a novel with 1995 Pulitzer Prize winner and Governor-General award winner Carol Shields. North Vancouver writer and actor Brooke Burgess stars as Bob in his co-production of evil at earls, a dark comedy that will run at the Firehall Arts Centre (as part of the Fringe Festival) September 5,7,8,14 & 15. For tickets call 280-2801. Burgess, a regular headliner at the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre, is currently in negotiations for a script he wrote with a Seattle producer. Watch for Burgess in future Grants from the Judy Dennis Emerging Artists Training Fund were recently awarded to Susan Smith (left) and Ilze Bebris (right). Both of these North Vancouver artists are students at the Emily Can Institute for Art and Design, where they are pursuing their respective careers in animation and sculpture.
