North Shore.Talent in Banff by Fif Fernandes North Vancouver, worked countless For Fif Femandes is an independent filmaker and producer of the A r t s Alive television program which will air on Shaw Cable, channel 4, Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 10:30 p.m., starting September 10. the past 17 years producers, hours of putting together an impressive award-winning team and proposal for her dream child, an exciting 13-part adventure travel series. Executive producers are former North Shore residents, Elie Savoie {Beachcombers) and business mogul Claus Andrup, and there was interest from international broadcasters and distributors for the show. It should also be noted that Leonard has been story producing, shooting and editing for Arts Alive T V , the 30minute television program about the arts on the North Shore which w i l l be airing on Shaw Cable this fall. Deep Cove Creative, a newly formed production company consisting of the husband and wife team o f Patti Poskit and K i r k Lawton, were thrilled to get interest for three of their projects for 1997. While producers are pitching their ideas and products. North Shore r e s i broadcasters and funders have been making their annual pilgrimage to the " M e c c a of Television": the Banff Television Festival. The internationally renowned festival is a week-long event of seminars, workshops, screenings of the world's best television programs and the Banff Rockie Awards (which have the same kind of prestige in the television industry as the Cannes Awards do in the film industry). This year's Festival in June had several North Shore independent producers making their mark in the international marketplace--stay tuned to find out what they are working on. Lynn Valley resident N i c k Orchard, president of Soapbox Productions, has been at Banff for the past six years. Last year he pitched a documentary astronomy series, Cosmic Highway, to the Discovery Channel. They loved it. Principal photography has started and the series w i l l air in the new year. Orchard is writing Bridges, a movie ducing credits are impressive: For the B B C he produced The Eastenders, The Marksman and Jumping the Queue. So why does this veteran keep coming to Banff? "I go to keep in touch with the key players and gather information on what they are looking for. If I didn't come to Banff, I would have to travel to Toronto, the United States and Europe; but here everyone is in the one place." Less than a year ago A C F A was in dire straights with a deficit of over a quarter of a million dollars. Today, it is overcoming its challenges and things are looking up. The 547 membership of A C F C has been crewing " M o v i e of the Weeks." Recently completed are Exception to the Rule, Dead Give Away and Blood Hound II. Business is picking up and by the end of this year, Conor O'Sullivan and the A C F C crew w i l l have brought approximately $70 million into British Columbia. It was an exciting festival and the amount of talent from the North Shore alone was astounding.
