visual arts Guest curator at Seymour Air Gallery Rachelle Geneau spoke with over 30 North Shore artists in her quest for Interior E x t e r i o r Spaces exploring sculpture iron, and wood, and many incorporate found objects from nature. Visits to Michael Binkley and Ian Rowles' private homes stone sculp lure gardens are also part of the exterior component. Binkley's subjects range from the abstract to the figurative. His forms are enhanced by the sensuous nature of stone. Rowles' works, predominantly of marble and granite, focus on the power and beauty of wildlife. Visitors are welcome to Binkley's garden in North Vancouver (535 East 1st St.) and Rowles' garden in West Vancouver 2603 Nelson St.) on Saturday, Seplember 21, and Saturday, September 28, from noon to 5 p.m. Searching for and meeting with North Shore sculptors has been a revealing and exciting adventure. The people at Seymour Art Gallery Sculptures featured within the gallery investigate the realm of nature and humanss relations and possibilities within it. Carole Driver's Forest Found consists of a cast iron and rust-surfaced bust resting on an altarlike old-growth timber structure. Driver utilizes themes of interconnectedness with nature, timelessness and renewal. Margaret Witzsche uses pit-fired clay and branches in If Only Our Armour Were as Light as Leaves I. She explores the evolution of armour in relation to weapons' technology, and our personal need for protection. Pat Tipping's hand-built clay installation investigates the spiritual quest that reliquaries and their treasures inspire, while Natasha Rasmussen combines the forms of musical instruments and plant life, cast in bronze and presented on stemlike iron pedestals. Bruce Watson continues his Migration Series with Rock Tail Deer #2 and Sarah, A Triceratops. Both works are made of natural and polished basalt with bronzed protrusions creating a hybrid of stone and animal. Exterior sculptures will include a site-specific totem pole and carving demonstration by Rick (XwaLackTun) Harry, a Squamish Nation artist, in Panorama Park, at Deep Cove. Harry's designs are grounded in traditional Coast Salish culture, mythology and a deep respect for nature. He views the process of creating as an important source of healing and empowerment. Natasha wanted to provide an exhibition opportunity for emerging and established North Shore sculptors and thus began my search. I discovered a vibrant sculptural community working in a variety of unique and expressive styles. North Shore arts organizations provided me with lists of recommended artists, though 1 was ,, ^ < 8 surprised by the shortage of artist files with reumes or visual documentation. I spoke with over 30 sculptors and conducted many studio visits. I was repeatedly impressed by the number of artists whose work was inspired by British Columbia's rich landscape, a concern and reverence for nature and an exploration of humans' roles within it. Interior Exterior Spaces: exploring sculpture consists of work by eight contemporary North Shore sculptors. Through contour and form, themes encompassing the environment and its symbolic significance are spatially explored.
