festival JLhe streets and parks of West Vancouver will come alive with the arts and celebrations during the sixth annual Harmony Arts Festival August 9-18. Park Royal Shopping Centre, the seawalk. seaside parks and storefronts in Dundarave and Ambleside businesses wr feature art display and performances of ail kinds. New to the festival this year is a five-day Harmony Kid Art Camp to be held at the Silk Purse Arts Centre. The week's schedule will include integrated arts activities, culminating in a performance on Saturday. August 17. in conjunction with the Harmony Arts Festival's Creative Kids Day. Learning and fun will come under the creative direction of North Shore resident Sharon Quirke and Bowen Island resident Melissa Ander. Quirke. a visual artist, has shown her work in Vancouver, western Canada and the western United States. A mother, teacher, former dancer and art consultant. Quirke has the perfect background, to run a weeklong arts camp. She has a teaching degree from Harmony Arts Festival is Back! SFU and a Master of Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal. Quirke taught art classes in the '70s and '80s in Quebec I British Columbia and dedicated the later part of the '80s and '90s to painting, showing her own work her singing and cello playing skills. Ander is going to make good use of both her musical background and more recent experience as a co-ordinator at the Bowen Island Day Camp during her week at the Kids Art Camp. With the jurying process complete, over 100 merchants will participate in the ArtBeat program by displaying chosen works of art in their storefronts. Musicians and performers will be active throughout the festival area and in particular on the waterfront stage--prepared by the West Vancouver gardeners--in John Lawson Park. The public will have a chance to observe the creative process as 50 artists create Harmony originals in the parks as part of the Art in the Park and ArtDemos programs. If purchasing is part of your enjoyment of the creative process, you'll be happy to know all these original works will go on sale at the end of the festival at the Harmony Art Sale on Sunday, August 18. There will also be the Harmony Crafts Sale, featuring local craft artists under the tents at the foot of 15th Street. Other events include musical concerts at West Vancouver waterfront concert venues, with sounds ranging from jazz. soul, rock and reggae to the big band sound. She has ten years experience with the Vancouver Academy of Music and five years with the Anna Wyman School of Dance. Her performance experience includes the role of Dolly in West Vancouver Secondary School's production of Hello Dolly and she was a member of the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Children's Choir.
