women's monument - by Loreen Bennett unflinchingly expository, the variety Cjrief. shock and anger followed the tragedy of the murder o f 14 women a t Montreal's L ' E c o l e Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. The Women's Monument w i l l be a national monument and memorial to those 14 women and to women everywhere who are victims of male violence. Marker of Change, a serene and powerful circle o f 14 pink granite benches, w i l l be situated under the trees in Vancouver's Thornton Park. This monument w i l l be a national symbol of remembrance, of healing and change-a place from which w o m e n and men can say "Never again." To make this monument a reality, the Capilano College Women's Monument Committee is presenting a filmathon called "Reel Change: Towards a Day Without Violence" on Dec. 2, at Pacific Cinematheque. The day is being billed as a marathon packed with films, videos, speakers and performers addressing the issue of women healing from violence in a positive and provocative way. One of the guest speakers w i l l be Suazanne Laplante-Edward, mother of Anne Marie Edward, one of the 14 women murdered at I'Ecole Polytechnique. Laplante-Edward is an inspiring spokeswoman who has worked tirelessly on the issue of violence against women since her daughter's tragic death. F i l m and video artists w i l l convey their messages in their unique way, evoking emotions of anger, laughter and sorrow. Curators Jennifer Torrance of the National F i l m Board of Canada. Claudia Morgado, an independent filmmaker, and Venay Felton of Vancouver Women in F i l m and Video are presenting an eclectic line-up of recent works from across Canada and abroad. Shorts, features, animation, live-action, documentaries, comedies and dramas are all included in the day's schedule. From the vigorously experimental to the w i l l be inspiring. The committee is asking individuals, groups and organizations to raise $500 a seat through tax-deductible pledges from friends, colleagues and businesses. A l l seat holders w i l l receive a broach created by changes M y r i a m Fougere. There w i l l be door and seat prizes and the most successful fund raisers w i l l be given a hand-coloured blueprint of Marker of Change from designer. Beth Alber. Lunch, coffee and body movement breaks w i l l be provided throughout the day for everyone's comfort.
