awards -- by Linda Feil Success For FANS formed a solo piece: members of 43 lbs. of Wasted Space offered a taste of their witty, frenetic improv; North Shore Writers' Association members Gerhard Winkler, Adeline Wilson and Colleen Heinrich captivated and charmed the audience with readings from their recent prize-winning works; students Dawn Coulter (soprano). Leslie Scholton (piano accompanist) and Sung Min Ahn (solo piano) from Capilano College's music program demonstrated their impressive talents; and the ebullient members of vocal ensemble Pandora's Vox brought the evening's entertainment to a rousing end. The perfect finish to the event was the reception in the Presentation House Art Gallery. The exhibition "World Tea Party" was the ideal setting to feature edible art, with culinary creations by a selection of local caterers. Over 25 raffle prizes were donated by North Shore artists, arts organizations and businesses. Lucky winners went home with everything from catalogues and tea from Presentation House Art Gallery to free interior design consultations from Golden Touch Interiors, from tickets for a concert by pianist Michèle Mares at Centennial Thealre to a full-day boat excursion from Sewell's Marina. It was a night to appreciate the arts community. Join in next year's FANS Award Night and show your support for North Shore arts and culture. C S Undo Feil is a member Commission Board. of the FANS Z Y s Martin Millerchip wrote in the North Shore News, the North Shore Arts Commission "hosted a great bash." The October "bash" honoured Robert Clothier, widely known for his role as Relic in the Beachcombers television series, as well as North Shore talent and creativity. The event resulted in the North Shore Arts Commission successfully establishing the Fund for the Arts on the North Shore (FANS) while applauding North Shore arts. The FANS Award is a means of honouring an internationally renowned North Shore artist who has a substantial and recognized body of work. Actor/sculptor Clothier received an exquisitely crafted glass sculpture designed and created by North Shore artist Marina Papais. Clothier's win was particularly commendable as the other finalists were dancer/choreographer Judith Marcuse and sculptor Robert Studer. Clothier modestly said he was shocked by the award and did not think of himself as being amongst such acclaimed artists as Marcuse and Studer. "I think this is a tremendous honour and I'm stunned actually because there are so many very fine artists on the North Shore." Clothier was also pleased with the Arts Commission's efforts in recognizing North Shore talent. "It stimulates our awareness of the arts on the North Shore." The inaugural FANS Award Night at Presentation House Cultural Centre opened with a silent auction of artworks by 19 respected North Shore artists. Once the bidding closed, people took their seats in the theatre to enjoy an excellent and eclectic lineup of local talent. Expertly hosted by North Shore actors Gillian Barber and Peter Jorgensen. the evening held something for everyone: Cydney Nielsen, a seasoned dancer from The Anna Wyman School of Dance Arts, per- Robert award Don Arts Clothier from S.Williams, Shore Commission. receiving his FANS Chair, North committee and the North Shore Arts FANS-TASTIC!
