their feet." It was hard to see the light feet with the young men's Grass Dance, however. Testosterone flowed freely as they hopped and thrashed the air with feathered arms. The crowd cheered loudly at the end o f each performance and Gatorade was the drink of the hour. M a n y o f the other dances have a more direct link to the environment. The men's traditional dances include the C r o w H o p which incorporates bird-like head-bobbing and strutting movements based on its namesake. The Sneak U p . on the other hand, is drawn from the stealth necessary in hunting and warfare. O n the final day, the Squamish Nation picked three young girls to be their Queen, Princess and Tiny Tot for the following year. Jessica Baker, who was named Queen, explained they were chosen based on their school work, extra curricular activities and involvement in the community. N o w that she's royally. Jessica w i l l have to keep all of that up and participate in other powwows and events. O f special importance to Nahanee is the effect these powwows have on all of the children. She's witnessed positive shifts in young people w h o begin to connect with their cultural roots. Working in conjunction with the North Vancouver School Board, she has organized yearly powwows at Queen M a r y Preschool and there are now six language and cultural programs in different schools on the North Shore. A l l of this helps promote cross-cultural understanding and gives Native children a sense of pride in their heritage. "One young boy. he was kind o f a bad egg in class. A n d once we started the cultural program, talking about our ancestors and how they lived and how we should live today, he just went right into his art work. H e won the local contest at the school. The teachers and the principal were just so proud o f him." Pride was evident among all the people and nations at the annual Squamish Powwow. C o m e out next year and watch it grow.
