appropriate to our times." Arthur M i l l e r s play. The Crucible, is one of the six plays in the Playhouses line-up for this season and one of three plays which C o x w i l l direct herself. "It's about a man who is liberal and holds to the truth and is hung for it. H i s spirit is killed and people are left living in fear o f what could happen to them. When people are made to be very frightened, they don't behave very well. The more frightened they are. the more they gang up. I think we are living in these kinds o f times. It's a dangerous time." Another play C o x believes w i l l connect people to its characters is Harold Pinter's Betrayal. "This play is so relevant to the very urban life," says C o x . "It's about that moment at the party when something transcendent happens. A n d nobody is there to tell you not to act on your feelings. You want " i t " whatever that " i t " is: love, romance, sex. It's about what we do when we're lonely and don't communicate with our partner. M y audience does this. I know they do." Cox recently met with Pinter in England and received his enthusiastic permission to update the play. "I didn't want an English 70's piece." explains C o x . She also got the nod from Pinter to add a new element to the play: a saxophone w i l l be playing throughout the play. "I want a sax playing all the way through just to steam it up, because when the groin goes, then you're in trouble." Cox says choosing plays the audience w i l l connect to is part o f her passion for the poetry and art people create in theatre. "The great thing about people is we can play with words just for fun. Just for the helluvit. That's what art is: it's useless. That's why it's a gift and worth more than any diamond."^©" N o t e : T h e workshops by Susan C o x can booked through the Playhouse by calling 872-6622, they include four sessions held in the evenings, 7-10 p.m. and cost $90. decoration, w e a v i n g & more! i n s t r u c t i o n , a c t i n g for f i l m a n d TV piano, cinematography, {_) T3 directing, m u s i c theory, guitar, ~ PJ d r a w i _3 ng, O film and television studies, video production interior w o r k s h o p s w i t h Kiff H o l l a n d , acrylics, writing vocal the arts 'oil painting, screenwriting, photography watercolour (/) ad c o p y w r i t i n g \<0ga 984-4901 i n f o r m a t i o n f » C M Capilano College · r e g i s t r a t i o n 2 Extension Programs 0 5 5 Purcell Way, North Vancouver, B .
