Larry opened the floor for discussion. Lucy Collings suggested we cut off renewals at June 3O so that we know by the end of June what are membership is at. We should enforce this deadline. Someone suggested meeting more times per month. Larry countered that weekly painting sessions at Klee Wyk meet weekly. More meetings would make for smaller sub-groups. This will be explored via the survey meeting of like-minded groups. Tyke suggested an initiation fee. If a member fails to sign up before the deadline, they will have to pay the initiation fee again. Another way would be to offer a discount if members renew prior to a certain date. Wanda suggested that attendance is wiped off the slate if members fail to renew on time. Tyke also wondered if we've ever explored why people leave our club as a way of tracking members. It was decided to leave things alone and discuss the issue later as deemed necessary. 2."Jurying" Edith gave the members some history on our jurying process and explained our current process. She opened the floor to discussion. A member expressed concern that the digital image does not correctly illustrate a painting with regard to colour, texture, etc. They can also be digitally altered. Edith explained that different screens show colours differently. A convenience is that the member doesn't even need to be in town during the jurying process. Jane Armstrong said that some jurors do prefer to see the actual paintings rather than a digital image. At this point the jurors only see the title and medium, but in future they will also know the size of the paintings as well. Top scores are sent back to the jurors who collaborate and choose the awards. This past jurying was a bit different in that a committee chose the awards from a group of paintings the jurors said were "award worthy". The FCA does all of their jurying digitally and after selections have been made, awards are given to the actual paintings once they are hanging. On the topic of altering paintings prior to jurying, Edith agreed that this is possible; however we need to count on the integrity of our artists. We could always refuse to hang a painting that does not match the digital image. While colours may vary from screen to screen, value and composition are the main focus for jurors. Barry Chadwick who has juried shows, feels there are times when the screen image and the actual painting are different enough that it would have affected his choice. We need to continue to improve the photography component of our process. Paintings can always be photographed by the club if the member is concerned about the quality of their photography. Regarding socializing at juryings, Edith feels we need to find other ways to fill these social needs other than these jury sessions.
