APRIL 2008 NEWSLETTER PAGE 5 Past President's Report Nominating Committee For newer members, the fiscal year for the Guild ends on June 1, and our June 17 meeting becomes our Annual General Meeting. This is when we review the year including our year end financials. We also elect our new Board for the next year. Our standing rules specify a maximum term of 2 years for any one position, which shares the effort for executive roles among members and incorporates new perspectives and experiences on the Board. This also allows for overlaps and some continuity. This is a call for candidates to be considered for the board. Please let me know if you are interested in discussing this possibility. If you have ideas or concerns, serving on the Board is a great way to pursue these. If you know of someone who would be a good candidate you can nominate them or pass these names on. You may have some personal time concerns about in taking on an executive position. However, here are a number of things that have helped: · The overall list of projects and new initiatives for change in the Guild are very modest for the foreseeable future. This will reduce time demands and simplifies the roles. · With the number and enthusiasm of our members, including the many new ones, we do not have a general issue in finding help to accomplish things in the Guild, so you are less likely to get "stuck" with a responsibility without assistance. · In addition, most board members have assistants, an understudy or a committee to assist them in everything from strategy, taking on specific sets of tasks and duties, or providing continuity and experience from the past. · We have also used the approach of Co-Directors (eg Workshops) to essentially do a form of job-sharing. This splits up the workload and it also means that one of the pair can travel or attend to scheduling issues with a built in backup plan. So, the committee (Jane Armstrong, Wanda Doyle, Anne McMahon or I) would love to hear from you to discuss possibilities with you. If you feel you are not quite ready for a board position, we can match your interests, ideas and experience with committees, projects or as an understudy to give you an opportunity to participate and get to know the Guild better. There is NO better way to get to know other members and form social connections and good friendships with other members than participating in these ways.
