This figure takes into account the cost of renting Klee Wyck for workshops up to and including 6 Dec 06. (West Vancouver District requires payment in full, two weeks ahead of scheduled use, for which we have issued post-dated cheques). Our first workshop for this year was given by Rick McDiarmid who is well known and thus commands a higher fee than most of our regular instructors. To cover this higher cost we established a fee of $75 per participant based on the available space for 20 participants and 80% occupancy (16 people), however the number of participants was only 10 resulting in a net loss of $522. We can't continue to run losses like this so let's have a better turnout for future workshops. During past exhibitions we think that we have lost sales because we were unable to accept credit card payments, so we are presently looking into the cost of being able to accept VISA credit cards as a means of payment. Preliminary inquiries indicate that the cost is reasonable. The budgeted amount is $350 /year with contingency and there is a one time fee of $150. This capability could then be used for membership fees, workshop fees, at our exhibitions and so forth. The goal would be to offset these costs with more revenue from the sales of some paintings that we feel we are losing today and through the increase of our commission on sales from 10 to 15% as discussed at the last meeting. cPu6(icity cF(orence)l((ardice 604-925-3039 frogsnest@telus.net Gordon Davis, Jane Armstrong and Florence Allardice have paintings in "The Artists' Salon" show at the Ferry Building. SeiThig.-- not sitting! su6mittei6y Cathy cR9ddie It is easier to sell other people's work than your own because you can rave about something you have not done yourself. Enthusiasm is infectious and most people want to think they make good choices or that their opinion is best, so when they have selected a painting they like, they love having someone else agree with them. Sitting on duty at a show is not so much a time to chat with a friend, as an opportunity to talk to many people. Treat it like entertaining at home, greet everyone with a smile, it is easier to engage in conversation with them later. Buying a painting is not a necessity, it is a wish list item, and you can help fulfill that wish. Approach someone who is looking for an extended time at a painting and stop behind them. You can then say something like "Isn't it great!' or "I really like this one too'. It doesn't matter if you actually like the painting yourself, the idea is to get them to start talking about how they feel about it. It somehow clarifies your thoughts when you speak out loud or write something down. Once it is taken from a thought to a word, it solidifies something, and it also lets you know what it is you are feeling. Each painting is different
