She had recently moved from Eastern Canada to West Vancouver where she met Mrs. Irene Blackhall who was a member of the Sketch Club and who encouraged her to join. At that time she was new to West Vancouver and found a rich source of friendships in the Club. At that time she said that the social aspect of the club was very important and as there were fewer members. They had numerous coffee parties and pot luck meals. She remembers these very fondly and made many friends through these social activities. She is disappointed in the name change and says that the organization will always remain the Sketch Club to her. As a professional portrait artist Mrs. Smily traveled extensively throughout the province giving workshops through the auspices of the Federation of Canadian Artists of which she is a past president, all the while painting with local artists and showing her work in such local galleries as the Silk Purse and the Ferry Building.. Not only is she a portrait painter but her other specialty is horses. This has been a special passion for her from her earliest years. Her portraits include the Queen Mother and a number of local and international dignitaries and such illustrious celebrities as Marlene Dietrich.. Her works are exhibited in England and across Canada. At her home in West Vancouver she is surrounded by her own lovely works and those of other famous artists. At eighty eight Mrs. Smily is stall an attending member of the North Shore Artists Guild. She is also a member of the Royal Society of Arts (London), Federation of Canadian Artists (past president) and the Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists. In 1996, she became the second recipient of the North Shore FANS Award. A gentleman was looking for a wedding present that he needed in a few days. He found Mary's painting on the Club Unfortunately, it had been sold at the Park Royal show, but website entitled "Saginaw Lake" Mary had another one that also dealt with Saginaw Lake, so he bought it having been able to view it online. Good work, Mary. Nell Turner, who would not at all say she is computer or Internet fluent, was one of the first volunteers scheduled to "sit" at the last Park Royal Show. To her surprise, a gentleman walked in and bought both of her paintings on the fist morning of the Show. He had seen them on the Guild website on-line show and came in early to get them before anyone else did. I think Nell might now say that this website stuff does seem to work in some cases!! Want your own artist website? For members who would like to have their own website, the Guild has a very innovative and affordable means of getting your to create and then maintain your own website. To get a description of this offering go to the Guild website at www.nsartists.ca, Log In (contact me if you have a problem or question on how to do this, and then in the menu on the left of the page select Information for Members, note the second item titled List of Links to Member Information, and click on Item 4, Member's Websites for a description. Contact me if you are interested in a Workshop at lachtem@shaw,ca. Many members have expressed interest in a class on how to improve their ability of taking digital photographs of their paintings. I will be having a clinic from 4:30 to 6 PM on Saturday Oct 14 at St. Stephen's Church. This will be just after the jurying so we will have the room and the setups for holding the clinic.
