Norih Shore Artists' Guild (formerly West Vancouver Sketch Club) April 2006 Page 5 helped keep the Federation from closing its doors. So thank you Bob for your efforts that have resulted in affecting all of us. Bob gleaned much information on teaching techniques while at Salt Spring. He shares that knowledge and experience in his demos and workshops. He is teaching a two Saturday workshop April 22 and April 29 at Capilano College. You may recall his watercolor demo for the Guild last September. He painted sky, mountains, mist and boats and wifi demonstrate and teach his methods in the workshop. For more information call him at 604-929-3608 or call the college at 604-983-7551. CONGRATULATIONS TO BARRIE CHADWICK Recently the Federation of Canadian Artists awarded Barrie Chadwick the status of SFCA Signature member of the Federation. This designation is not given lightly and was one of very few granted this year. Barrie's hard work, discipline and dedication along with his excellent talent has resulted in considerable success in the years since he retired as an architect and pursued his artistic career. - ()ice-cPresiient cEiitll Warner 604-980-5358 wanwre@ca.inter.net Many thanks to our Computer Committee who are currently inputting all of the ballots from our Capilano Mall Reception. If the attendee voted for your painting, that contact information will be shared with you in the Contact Management section of the website. Ride Program We need a volunteer please! We have a number of members who have, and continue to, contribute to the Guild, and who, for numerous reasons, are no longer able to drive themselves to our monthly meeting. We need someone to help us co-ordinate a ride program for these folks. This would entail just keeping a list of those who need a ride and those who are willing to drive someone. Contact and arrangement of rides would be up to the individuals. If you can help, please call me. In the meantime, if you need a ride or can offer a ride, please call me and I will start the list. Potential Artist Scam (Bob Rennie) I was recently emailed by a person who attempted a scam and I feel all artists should be aware of the process. Last December I was emailed by an "Evelyn Brown" who said she wanted to purchase some of the paintings on my web site- valued at about $4000 CND. After I responded she said that she would send a cheque that would cover the cost of the paintings, plus shipping and insurance. I told her that I would not send the paintings until the bank cleared the cheques and that that would take about one month. Seven money orders by United States Postal Service, each valued at $650 US arrived (no return address) after January 12 when we were in Mexico and so we did not tend to them until after February 15. There were no watermarks on the cheques and the colours on the cheques varied slightly. When I showed the cheques to TD Canada Trust they were suspicious for the same reasons, but accepted them with a 45 day freeze and forwarded them for processing. They phoned about 3 weeks later to tell me that they indeed were counterfeit and that they would be returned to me. I have since contacted the North Vancouver police department, but they are doubtful something can be done because the party is most likely out of Canada. In any event, the group is probably targeting artists. The language in the emails is in broken and poor English, they do not conduct business in an expected mariner, the cheques are for more than the selling price of the product (probably hoping for a return cheque for the balance) and there is no return or mailing address. I have asked her three times for a mailing address- no response each time. So be cautious about sending off your paintings or writing cheques for a balance. Bob Rennie, AFCA
