The big news is that we are planning to have a reception to kick off the exhibition. We are asking each member to invite up to 10 guests to the reception, where we hope to take a page from most other shows and have many of our paintings seen (and perhaps sold) at the reception. In order to have a license to serve wine, we are also required to have a "by invitation only" gathering so we will need to have the names of your invitees in advance. Please start thinking about the guests you wish to invite. Maybe as you are doing your holiday cards you can do an invitation list for the Exhibition at the same time. Given the time frame you need to have this done by the time of the January meeting bring your names, mailing addresses and e-mail addresses or send them to Jennifer Tunner at 604921-1610 or email them to her at stutho@stargate.ca by that time. The reception will only be successful and worth while if we get a large turnout and you know best who would be interested in a show like ours. - Another idea we will be implementing at this show is the notion of a People's Choice Award. Visitors to the show will vote for their favourite painting and their ballot will also be a ticket for a draw we will have on the second last day of the show (Saturday). The winner will get a $100 credit against the purchase of any unsold painting which they can choose before the end of the show on Sunday. We are excited to try these ideas to get even more awareness of our shows and the great art that our members create. Yuletide Party We often say that we do not get enough time at our meetings and other events to sodalize and meet and talk to other members. Well, we have a great opportunity to do so at the Yuletide party which will be held on December 14th. Thanks to Heather Luccock and her team for organizing this, and to Jacquie Manning for securing Kiff Holland to discuss art and artists with us for part of the evening. This should be a great evening. Let Heather know if you will attend so she can allow for -- the food and drink, and you can pay at the door if you have not done so before. -- cEfii6itions ..14(Spence 604-988-2737 allinspence@telus.net The dates for the two upcoming shows are Capilano Mall Feb. 6-12, set up will be sun Feb. 5 at 6 pm, and the Ferry Building will be June 27 to July 9, 2006. The Brewster Café show for February has been cancelled because it was not a good venue for the club it needs large works that can be viewed from a distance. Any paintings designated for Brewster's cancelled show (Brewsters2 or B2 at the May 2005 jurying) will be reassigned to the Cap Mall show in Feb. The list for the Cap Mali show will be published in the January newsletter, and the Brewster's reassignments will be on it as well as the delivery and pickup times for the show. Ferry Building show information will be published at a later date. Juiy Coordinator JfeatfierLuccoc& jurying November 4 and 5,2005 A big thank you to everyone on the jurying teams. I thought that overall it went very well. We instituted a new way of proceeding from registering the paintings to having them photographed and once we got going it went very well. Next time we will have it perfected! As usual Edith Warner did a yeoman's job with the computer assisted on Friday evening by Mary Johnston. Thanks to Larry Achtemichuk and Richard Sharpe for doing the photography. Once again, to everyone, thank you. November 5th 2005 Jurying critique The jurors were Alessandra Bitelli and Jean Duffey (Editor for Canada for the International Magazine). They were very professional and took their time in examining each painting. They did however complete the jurying in 3 and half hours and gave us some valuable feedback. Their feeling was that the subject matter was generally good for an amateur club. On the other hand they said that the work was not very inspiring nothing to grab you and that we are very cautious. However there was some very good work. Another mention, there were a lot of paintings with trees going nowhere; they wondered what you were supposed to be looking at Not very good compositions. - They suggested that we need more education and that some knowledge is missing. Here are some points to think about · Linear perspective is ok but the values are missing. Meaning flat, no depth i.e.: painting from photos which are flat. Needs warm and bolder colours in the foreground and as the painting recedes should have cooler colours with lighter values and less detail in the background. This is called aerial perspective. · The basics need improvement · technique with the medium · drawing and composition · value and composition · colour and composition On the jurors marking sheets there are columns for them to critique. Composition, values, subject, drawing, technique and framing. One of the jurors said that that we shouldn't have subject in the critique column because all subjects are good its just the way we use them that can be the problem, i.e.: composition etc.
