Brewster's, being new for us, is still unproven potential. It is an opportunity which merits fostering and close observation. We will find ways to promote our presence there and build public awareness of what could turn out to be a rotating exhibit of WVSC artists' work Certainly we will give it our best shot. Please note that if you have a painting from the last jurying which is marked Bi, it is assigned to the Brewster's show August 2nd to 28th. A list of participating artists and their paintings is attached. If marked B2, paintings will be part of a later show as yet not scheduled. All participants in the first show will be contacted in July with more details. I have enjoyed working with everyone, and being part of the exhibitions team this year. Happy summer! Jur)ng Lynn We6ster 604-925-4214 klzvwestvan@shazv.ca Congratulations to the artists who were recognized by the jurors in the May jurying session. The award winning paintings were: Juror's Choice Awards to Jane Armstrong Margaret Dennis Honourable Mentions to Mary Johnson Helen Ott Jacquie Manning Jane Armstrong Al Spence Florence Allardice Lucy Colliings Kayaking, Indian Arm Ivy Cove Devon Fall -Cowichan Valley Klee Wyck Backlight Majorca Cottage The Cariboo Birch Grove Abandoned Station Coastal Creek - Jacquie Manning, our Juror Coordinator has provided the following report from the jurying session. The quality of work was extremely high and the jurors wished they could have given more awards! They were surprised that virtually all of the final prize selections were landscapes and encourage us to make more daring, less conservative choices in subject matter and technique (brush strokes, paint quality and composition). The work was generally of high quality but perhaps too serious. They would have liked to see more humour and pleasure shining through. A few paintings, however, were truly engaging. Framing: (once again!) · · · Sometimes the framing overpowered the work. Often a much simpler and inexpensive frame would work better. Make sure your mat is wide enough to show off the image to an advantage. Narrow mats unbalance a painting. Bad or inappropriate framing is disrespectful of the work. We, sketch club members, discussed the possibility of inviting a framer to one of our meetings next year to demonstrate good and inappropriate frame choices for particular paintings. The jurors found this jurying difficult (they were there until 3:30 P.M.!) because of the high quality of the work. They suggested giving a mark out of 10 possible points instead of 8 because a 4 point scale is too balanced and indecisive. They would like to see more of "who we are" through our
